Sharkademy 2025 is officially underway – and Tuesday set the tone for the week in style!

This year’s cohort enjoyed an epic day offshore, with the Celtic Deep firing on all cylinders: encounters with blue sharks, bait balls of bluefin tuna peppered by gannets and close swim-bys from curious common dolphins.

What a start! 🦈🐬🐟✨

Absolute pleasure hosting James Stewart from the Telegraph on a recent Skomer Snorkelling trip. Lovely article highlighting just what a shining light Skomer is amongst what is unfortunately a bleaker picture for puffin colonies in the North Atlantic. This is due to Skomer benefiting from the protection of the Marine Conservation Zone and thus having healthy sandeel stocks in close proximity to the island.

James' playful take on how we interact with the puffins is actually super important. The best results, both for the human and the puffin, come when the humans are still and the puffins approach. The decoys are key to piquing their curiosity and making that magic happen.

Article available here. Thanks James!

DEEP SEASON 2025

Yesterday we headed offshore for our first Deep trip of the season. It didn't disappoint.

Blue water, blue shark and a swim-by from a curious common dolphin.

Plenty of spots available for the season still. Get involved!

Fantastic feature in !

Big thanks to Kelley at for joining us and conveying the excitement from the day. Appreciate the time you took to learn all about what CD is about too. 🩵

Our Lundy trips are a fantastic adventure. The seals are outrageously fun to swim with and only an hour and a half boat ride from Tenby with . Great chance of a dolphins en route too.

It's April 14th. Happy Puffin day everyone!

Such a treat to head out on a pre-season shake down with and friends from last week.

There's really nothing quite like a puffin-eye perspective of South Haven in Spring. Wonderful to see the birds return in good numbers.

Our Skomer snorkelling trips are almost full for this season. If you're quick you can snap up the last few spots.

Join us in the sunshine in Manorbier this Saturday for a Spring clean and Easter egg hunt with a difference!

We're doing a sweep of the strandline in search of shark and skate egg cases (mermaid purses) and we'll be having a good rummage for rubbish too.

As they say, many hands make light work. It would be amazing to have you join us!

Look for team down on the beach, no worries if you're a bit late to the party.

As well as cleaning up the beach, protecting wildlife from entanglement and plastic pollution, you'll be contributing to shark science as part of the Great Egg Case hunt AND any litter collected will contribute to the beach clean survey data too.

Hope to see you down there!

In the week that we celebrate women in marine science, it has been amazing to read about leading female figures that have been so influential in our field and have provided so much inspiration to those that follow in their fin-strokes.

Their origin stories all contain some form of first break… a light bulb moment. What is clear is that there is no clear starting point. Finding that first step, with doubts ringing in the ears, can feel like a giant stride into the unknown.

At Celtic Deep we want to provide a boat, right here in Wales, from which young people can take their first plunge into the deep-end of ocean field work.

One of the early career initiatives we’ve established is working alongside universities to provide work placements for students here in Wales.

We’ve been lucky enough to welcome some wonderful humans to our team.

Ella and Grace are both Marine Biology undergraduates from and in the last 6 months they’ve mixed chum, deployed BRUVS, hauled kit, met with decision makers, crunched data and spent hours in the water with sharks, tuna, seals and puffins.

The best bit, they’ve also been visiting schools telling the next generation of ocean enthusiasts all about it.

Thank you Ella & Grace!
