Situated next to the parish church, 1 Wreay Cottage has a long history, first as stables for the vicarage and later as a farm worker’s cottage. Now transformed into a cosy hideaway in this busy little village, it serves as a base for both the Lake District and the Howgill Fells. If you just want to hibernate in front of the log fire or s
it out in the garden, then Shap has all you need - a very well-stocked Co-op, an award-winning fish and chip shop and a couple of pubs serving food just a 10-15 minute walk away. The local community also hosts numerous events in the village, including history talks, a pop-up cinema and other social gatherings. Further afield (but not very far!) are the lakes and mountains - 6 miles away is Haweswater, with its drowned village of Mardale, where the street and field boundaries are still visible in drought conditions. Pooley Bridge and Ullswater are 10 miles away. Even closer (3 miles) and much quieter is Wet Sleddale, which is actually a reservoir, but makes for a very pleasant 3.5 mile walk around its shores. The ruins of Shap Abbey are a mile and a half away - a pleasant spot for a picnic - and the Wainwright Coast-to-Coast Walk runs through the village.
