V8 Defender fuel economy — 24 miles per gallon from a 5.3 litre.

RL83 5.3, 355 horsepower, eight speed automatic. The most economical V8 petrol conversion we offer for a classic Defender, with owners reporting 23 to 24mpg on a run.

The surprise is that the manual version outsells the automatic. Same engine, same output, and plenty of buyers still want three pedals.

After a low-mileage Ineos Grenadier with the factory kit already sorted? This Inky Black 3.0 diesel has just landed.

A striking Grenadier 3.0 diesel in Inky Black with the 8-speed automatic, freshly in and prepared to our usual standard. It comes with factory Safari Windows and the popular Smooth Pack — so you get front park sensors and a reversing camera, power-heated mirrors, heated washer jets, a lockable central storage box, puddle lamps, ambient door lighting and extra charge points.

Inside it's full premium leather; outside it sits on multi-spoke dual-finish alloys wrapped in BFGoodrich All-Terrains, with graduated privacy glass finishing the look. It's a proper heavy-duty overlander that hasn't given up any comfort to get there.

Old Defender vs new Defender — which can you actually fix yourself?

Susanna is a dairy farmer. Asked what she'd hand down if her kids took over the farm, she went straight to a 90s Defender. Open the bonnet and everything's within reach and fixable with normal tools.

Her example: a modern electric handbrake needs a computer and a specialist tool. The old one needs a jack.

Is the Land Rover Defender finished as a working vehicle? We asked 100,000 country people and nobody was polite about it.

Farmers, gamekeepers and land managers at the Game Fair told us quad bikes and side-by-sides have taken the farm work, that the new Defender is a rich man's toy past a hundred grand, and that they wouldn't buy one. Then the man who's sold classic Defenders since 1988 agreed with them.

Then we asked them a different question.

Land Rover Defender 90 XS for sale, £29,995, 70,000 miles.

Best value Defender on our stand at the Game Fair and it drew a crowd all weekend. Black 90 XS, honest mileage, ready to go.

Classic Defender prices have climbed hard since production ended in 2016, so a straight 90 XS under thirty thousand with genuine miles is worth a look before it isn't.
