Corfu’s connection to Gerald Durrell continues to resonate to islanders and visitors alike, thanks to his memoir, “My Family and Other Animals” which brought the island’s character and charm to life.

This May marked the start of a year long recognition of his 100th birth anniversary.

Ionian Estates, alongside our sister companies TownhouseCo and Skinner & Skinner were proud to sponsor ‘The Durrell Suite’ - a Centenary Celebration Concert in Corfu town. The moving piece, originally written by Derek Lawrence to mark the 50th anniversary of Jersey Zoo was first performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. On the evening of May 24th, the music was performed again, this time by the Palaea Philharmonic Society. Drawing inspiration from Durrell’s writing, the piece offered a musical reflection of his enduring bond with the island.
