If your friends are tired of hearing about frogs, focus stacking, diffusers, tiny eyeballs, and “just one more macro shot”… we may have found your people. 🐸

Join us in Costa Rica for our beginner and advanced macro photography workshops with Laurent Naman and the Focus Photo Tours team. From tiny rainforest subjects to creative lighting and field techniques, we’ll happily talk macro all day long… and well into the night.

When did photography stop feeling like play?
Somewhere along the way, many of us started chasing:
The perfect image.
The next “keeper.”
The likes.
The validation.
The pressure to always create something worthy of posting.
And suddenly… the thing that once brought us peace starts feeling like work.
What if photography didn’t need a purpose every time you picked up your camera?
What if you photographed simply because you were curious?
Because the light felt beautiful.
Because a bird made you smile.
Because being outside helped you breathe a little deeper.
No expectations.
No pressure.
No audience.
Just curiosity, creativity, and connection. 📷✨
Some of our favorite moments in nature never become portfolio images — but they become memories we carry forever.
Maybe not every photo needs to be “successful.”
Maybe sometimes photography itself is the reward.

One thing that completely surprised me while photographing Jaguars in Brazil was just how much time they spend in the water.
Before visiting the Pantanal, I think many of us picture jaguars as secretive jungle cats moving silently through the forest… but here, they swim constantly.
We watched jaguars confidently cross rivers, patrol shorelines, and even hunt from the water with incredible power and focus. They are actually one of the strongest swimmers of all the big cats and are perfectly adapted to this wetland environment.
What amazed me most was how close they would come to the boat. We would quietly park, wait patiently, and suddenly a jaguar would slip into the river and swim right past us — calm, focused, completely wild, and absolutely unforgettable.
Moments like this remind you just how adaptable and powerful nature really is.

Sometimes when you watch young Kodiak bear cubs interacting, it’s impossible not to narrate the story in your head… or out loud.
The little grunts, the wrestling matches, the dramatic reactions, the “I’m tougher than you” energy… it can look so serious one second and completely adorable the next.
But this play fighting is actually incredibly important. Cubs use these interactions to build strength, coordination, confidence, and social skills they’ll need later in life. They’re learning boundaries, testing each other, and practicing behaviours they’ll carry into adulthood.
Watching these moments in Alaska felt like watching pure personality unfold right in front of us. Wild… chaotic… and honestly very relatable sibling.
Nature always finds a way to remind us that even the biggest predators start out as playful babies.

The male Volcano Hummingbird may be small, but he is impossible to ignore when that fiery throat catches the light.
That brilliant, shimmering patch of feathers on his throat is called a gorget — and it’s not just beautiful, it’s part of how hummingbirds communicate. Males flash their gorgets to attract females, defend territory, and warn off rivals. Depending on the angle of the light, the colours can appear to suddenly ignite like tiny flashes of fire.
Found in the highlands of Costa Rica, these tiny hummingbirds are incredibly fast, fiercely territorial, and full of personality despite only weighing a few grams. Watching one dart through the misty mountain forests is pure magic.
Without the light hitting just right, the gorget can even appear dark or almost invisible… one of nature’s coolest illusions. 📷✨
Definitely one of our favourite Costa Rican gems. 🇨🇷

Every photo we take tells a story… but the way we take it matters.
Tourism and wildlife photography are booming worldwide, and while that can create powerful opportunities for conservation, education, and local communities, it can also put incredible pressure on wildlife when ethics are ignored.
At Focus Photo Tours, we believe photography should protect wildlife — not disturb it.
That means:
• Giving animals space
• Never baiting or stressing wildlife for a photo
• Respecting nesting, feeding, and resting behavior
• Working with local guides and communities
• Choosing experiences that put wildlife welfare first
• Teaching photographers how to observe responsibly
Because no image is worth harming the very thing we love.
The truth is, ethical tourism can make a huge difference. Around the world, wildlife tourism helps support conservation, creates local jobs, protects habitats, and gives communities reasons to preserve wild spaces instead of losing them to development, hunting, or resource extraction. But only if we do it responsibly.
We are not perfect, and the industry still has a lot to learn, but these conversations matter. Small choices by photographers, guides, and travelers create ripple effects.
What can we all do better as wildlife photographers and traveller's?
We’d genuinely love to hear your thoughts below. 👇
