That’s exactly what you get when you spend time with Laurent Hesemans in Costa Rica.

Laurent is an extraordinary macro photographer, but ask anyone who has had the opportunity to learn from him, and they’ll tell you there’s so much more to him than his photography.

His patience, kindness, enthusiasm, and incredible knowledge of the natural world make him an exceptional teacher. He has a way of making even the tiniest creatures fascinating, helping you see things you might otherwise walk right past.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of our Canadian friends and family! 🍁

Today feels like a good day to reflect on just how much we have to be thankful for.

One of the things we are most grateful for this year is the community we are building here at Focus Photo Tours. What started with a shared love of wildlife, photography, and adventure has become something so much more.

To everyone who has joined us on a tour, shared a laugh, told a story, encouraged another photographer, or simply followed along and supported us this year, thank you.

It’s the people who make these experiences so special. The friendships that form, the connections that continue long after a trip ends, and the wonderful people we get to meet along the way.

We are so grateful that you have chosen to be part of our global community and we look forward to all the memories still to come.

That’s a wrap on an amazing workshop on Vancouver Island. Workshops are different from a tour. It’s an intensive to help you level up your photography from beginner to someone looking to improve this is a great way to learn. This week we had someone who had brought a camera to come on the workshop, a 20 yr photographer that wanted to learn to shoot manual for the first time and a couple of landscape photographers that wanted to try wildlife. I feel like a proud Mum. They were supportive of each other and ready to learn and the results were amazing. Not only did everyone move to full manual we were shooting from a zodiac which if you have never shot from a boat can be difficult even for experienced photographers. The best part of teaching for me is seeing the look on the participants face when they start taking pictures they never thought they could get. Day 3 of our Vancouver Island workshop brought fog to Bamfield, giving our participants a chance to work with different conditions.

The softer light and mist changed the feel of the coast, encouraging us to slow down and think differently about our compositions. There’s always something to learn when the weather changes—and sometimes the fog adds a little magic of its own.

Day two of our Vancouver Island photography workshop was all about whales, seals, and otters.

There is so much to love about spending time on the water, watching wildlife and trying to capture those moments that happen so quickly. Knowing when to lift the camera and when to just watch is always a balance. I could happily spend hours doing both.

There was nothing quite like seeing my first tigers in the wilds of India. And now I can’t get enough. 😅

Winter is getting closer in northern Alberta. The mornings are frosty, and for many photographers in the area, it signals the start of photographing great grey owls.

Owls have become very popular in the birding and photography world, and for good reason. They are beautiful. The way they move and hunt seems to be made for photography. From sitting quietly on a perch to taking flight, they can keep you watching for hours.

With that popularity comes responsibility. Give them space, keep their locations private, and let them hunt without interference. Never use bait to bring them closer for a photograph.

Some of the best moments happen when we slow down and simply watch. Getting to spend time with these beautiful birds is a privilege. Let’s make sure we leave them able to carry on being wild.

Toucans are a crowd favourite in Costa Rica, and photographing them is at the top of many photographers’ lists. But they’re a little trickier than you might think.

Although they’re fairly slow-moving and predictable for the most part, that shiny beak can get photographers into trouble. It’s easy to blow out the highlights, leaving you disappointed when you get home and look through your images.

One of the tips I offer photographers who travel with us is to shoot a little underexposed to help keep those beautiful details in the beak.
