Irene of Bridgwater, 1907

Irene of Bridgwater, 1907 Built in 1907, Irene is one of the last of the West Country Trading Ketches Irene is one of the finest examples of a West Country trading ketch.

Boasting a powerful gaff rig and fair lines, she is certainly one of the swiftest and most enjoyable boats in her class to sail. Taking mental health care onto the water, as Turn To Starboard's latest team member, we are offering trips for individuals, corporates, and those in need.

Irene has been out the water for just over a week and we are happy to report no rot at all was found under the copper and the planking is in good shape. After a lot of work we are due down the slip tomorrow. We will then head back towards Plymouth and the creek as soon as the swell dies down next week. If you wish to join us get in touch.

Irene hasn’t moved in a while but we are leaving the creek and going to Newlyn to lift Irene out the water and could use some help getting there.
The plan is to leave the creek on the 31st of March, we then will use the 3 best sailing days we can find to arrive in Newlyn on the 9th then slip the vessel for at least a week before bringing her back. When we are not sailing we will be doing maintenance. The only dates set in stone are the departure from the creek and the day we slip the vessel, so if you would like to join us at any point over the next month message us on Facebook or email us at [email protected] with your availability, and we’ll let you know what the plans are those days once we start to get a reliable weather forecast. While there is maybe some private sailing happening this year there is no plans for charter so this might be the only chance to step onboard this year.

The beautiful Irene and her crew have travelled to Londonderry to take part in the Foyle Maritime Festival. After a long voyage they are now settling in for a busy few days of all things Tall ship. ⛵️

Close friends & family gathered on Saturday 4th May to scatter Dr Leslie Morrish's ashes at sea.

Kind words, poems, stories & songs were shared, accompanied by tears & laughter.

Irene put on a show for the special occasion and we can't thank everyone involved enough for the kindness, love and warmth we all felt that day.

Over 60 years of passion & dedication he gave to Irene ending in one final hurrah surrounded by those he loved on the ship he so dearly loved.

Lets raise a glass one more time. Fair winds, Leslie.

Our lovely Alex has completed making Irene's new bowsprit net & has begun the head scratching task of fitting the net!

It's only rained some of the time...!🌧☂️

A big thank you to National Historic Ships UK for our funding which has allowed us to replace our net to ensure our crew and guests are safe whilst stowing sails!

We're more than ready for the spring sunshine to make an appearance!

This week we are finishing off our metal work, putting the final coats on the mizzen boom & gaff, and ordering the final parts to some little projects we have going on down below!

Yesterday we welcomed 2 new volunteers, Martin & Shamus who are already very at home on Irene. We've got long term crew, old friends and new people working on Irene this week which makes us, and Irene, very happy.

But most importantly, we have a healthy supply of baked goods kindly provided by the Skippers partner, Lucy 🍪🍰🫶🏼
