Wildlife Encounter of the Day #254 Oribi (Ourebia ourebi)

There are many antelopes to see on a tour western Uganda and this is certainly one of the cutest although it does not have the biggest ears! We hope to run this tour again soon with nearly 500 bird species, Gorillas, Chimpanzees and a variety of wonderful 'safari' animals too.

Wildlife Encounter of the Day #252 Red-breasted Paradise Kingfisher (Tanysiptera nympha)

Kingfishers are special at the best of times but stick a long tail and one and - just wow! This is just one of several species seen on our last West Papua Tour. Fancy joining us for these and Bird's of Paradise? Click here: https://birdswildlife.com/westpapua-sept06th-20th-2027/

Wildlife Encounter of the Day #251 Iberian magpie (Cyanopica cooki)

No one quite knows how it came to pass that there is a relict population of this far eastern corvid in the Iberian Peninsular. The two species are now treated as separate species.

We have several Spanish adventures in the offing so why not join David Lindo next May for an magical tour around Extremadura.

Wildlife Encounter of the Day #250 African Paradise Flycatcher (Terpsiphone viridis)

One of those wonderful crossover birds when you visit Oman. The southern part of Arabia is a global avian meeting point where birds from all points (and three continents) mingle together so that you can see these African beauties alongside Indian Rollers, Arabian Eagle Owls and European Barn Swallows.

We have postponed our 2026 tour until things hopefully settle down once again and we can visit this welcoming and safe country.

Wildlife Encounter of the Day #249 Hump Nosed Lizard (Lryiocephalus scutatus)

Our Sri Lankan tours have never been just about seeing the 36 (or is it ore now?) species of endemic bird as there is so much more to see from Leopards and Asian Elephants, sparkling Dragonflies and huge Butterflies and reptiles from giant Mugger Crocodiles down to some tiny forest dwelling Lizards. This Hump Nosed was pretending to be a branch!

Hopefully we can visit this beautiful country once again soon.

Wildlife Encounter of the Day #248 European Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus) with four Cinereous Vulture (Aegypius monachus)

For those of us who regularly visit Lesvos, seeing any Vulture is something of a novelty but on our Northern Greece tour we head east after Lake Kerkini and explore the marshes of the Evros and the hills of the Dadia Forest which are hope to three species of these magnificent birds.

Our inaugural tour this April was a great success and we shall be repeating it in 2027. https://birdswildlife.com/northern-greece-april-16th-25th-2027/

Wildlife Encounter of the Day #247 Northern Bald Ibis (Geronticus eremita)

Although it is possibly to see the prospering reintroduced birds in southern Spain (where they are doing very well and are spreading back into their range), there is something very special about watching a flock of these frankly prehistoric looking Ibis drift over a weathered sandstone cliff with an azure sea behind before dropping down to hunt for insects and reptiles amongst the sparely vegetated cliff top landscape. Join us next April for these and wealth of desert dwellers and north bound migrants.

Wildlife Encounter of the Day #245 Southern Screamer (Chauna torquata)

This very large bird is a prominent feature of our visits to the Brazilian Pantanal. It is a bit of an oddity with a big body, raptor wings, p***y crest, pheasanty-type bill and long very thick pink legs with long toes! And as for the screaming!

We hope to run another trip here very soon. Last trip report here: https://birdswildlife.com/2023/10/16/brazil-pantanal-june-2023/
