We had a great safari today doing the full round of Loch Kernsary with a lovely group of Dutch guests. The first highlight of the day was seeing a beautiful black throated diver in full breeding plumage. And the second highlight was a well-deserved beer at the The Loch Ewe Brewing Company Ltd new taproom at Poolewe Village Hall after our walk!šŸ»

We went to a fascinating workshop this morning all about moths, run by High Life Highland Countryside Rangers. This afternoon we saw this beautiful Painted Lady, not a moth but a butterfly.

Beautiful otter sculptures from Szeiler Art. We have an otter safari running tomorrow at 11am so we might see a real otter if we’re lucky, but I’d be just as happy to see one of these beauties!

Our safari guests are usually hoping to see an otter or eagle, but on our walk this morning we saw something just as important, if not quite as picturesque! Thousands of carrion beetle larvae feasting on a deer carcasse.

The cycle of death and life - some of these larvae will be snapped up by hungry birds, others by small insectivorous mammals like shrews. In turn the birds and shrews will be predated by raptors, pine martens, stoats and other predators. And so the cycle of life goes on.

Everything is linked to everything else and although the sight of thousands of squirming larvae might look a bit off-putting to us, it's a vital part of the food chain and a fascinating insight into the inter-dependencies of nature!
