95 years ago, on February 5th, 1918. HMS Tuscania, carrying over 2000 American troops, was spotted by German submarine which fired torpedoes at the Tuscania and sent her to the bottom of the sea. Today she lies few miles of Scotland's Isle of Islay.
Later that year another troop carrier, HMS Otranto, involved in a collision with another ship, sank near Islay. Some of the troops were saved by other ships and locals, unfortunately several hundred died in those incidents.

In 1920. American Red Cross erected the American Monument on the Mull of Oa in memory of those who died when the Tuscania and the Otranto sank.

The Blue Marble photo is 40 years old today, taken by astronauts of Apollo 17 on December 7, 1972, at 10:39 UTC. The image is one of the few to show a fully illuminated Earth, as the astronauts had the Sun behind them when they took the image. It was taken at a distance of 45,000 kilometres from Earth and is likely one of the most widely distributed photographic images in existence.
