The Singing Sands is a hidden gem on the picturesque Isle of Islay in Scotland. Take a scenic drive from the charming village of Port Ellen, winding up the rugged Oa hills. Just past the tranquil Kilnaughton graveyard, turn left and park near the cemetery. Follow the meandering path along Kilnaughton Bay's shoreline, keeping an eye out for playful otters, basking seals, and colourful eider ducks. Continue towards the distant lighthouse, then turn right onto a trail leading up the hill to the fabled Singing Sands. Explore the tranquil beach where the sands are said to sing beneath your feet. Before leaving, visit the beautiful lighthouse, a memorial commissioned in 1832 to honour Lady Ellenor Campbell. As you watch the ferries glide into Port Ellen Harbour, you'll see why the Singing Sands are a true wonder.

Discover the artist within while you holiday on Islay - and take home a unique memory of your stay.

If you love the amazing Islay scenery and are inspired by the incredible wildlife of this beautiful island, why not create your own unique souvenir and learn some new skills by joining local artist Dietmar Finger for an art workshop at Loch Gruinart nature reserve?

He will guide you through your own sketch at a location around the reserve or in the visitor centre, depending on the weather. Workshops are already planned for Thursdays in May and June including May 15, 22 and 28 and June 5 and 12. July and August dates to be announced.

⭐️ Jen Stout ⭐️

Jen Stout is an award-winning journalist and author from Shetland. Her debut non-fiction book Night Train to Odesa (2024, Polygon) was named best first book by the Saltire Society and is longlisted for the Highland Book Prize. It was a BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week.

Jen has lived in Moscow and Leipzig, and has worked all over Ukraine covering the impact of Russia’s war on ordinary people. Her reporting there was shortlisted for prizes by Amnesty International, the Foreign Press Association, and the Scottish Press Awards; in 2023 she won a Travelling Scholarship from the Society of Authors. She writes most often for the Sunday Post, Prospect magazine, and the London Review of Books.

Before going freelance Jen was a local newspaper reporter, and a BBC radio and TV journalist. She lives in Edinburgh.
