Did you know that you can still see where some of the main gates into Edinburgh once stood - symbolising the ‘world’s end’ for the citizens of Edinburgh living in what’s now the ‘Old Town’? 😍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Perched on a wee island at the confluence of three lochs is Eilean Donan Castle - one of the most photographed castles in our country! The Royal Navy destroyed the castle in 1719 after the Mackenzies and MacRaes were involved in the Jacobite risings along with at least 300 Spanish soldiers occupied the castle as an advance fleet of Spaniards aiding the Jacobites. Following a restoration in the 1920s and 1930s, the castle’s open to the public and has starred in film and television productions! We love stopping by here on our tours to the gorgeous Isle of Skye 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

On this day 280 years ago, Scottish and British history changed forever. The Battle of Culloden on 16 April 1746 saw the crushing defeat of the Jacobite cause to restore the Stuarts to the throne - and Bonnie Prince Charlie’s attempt ended with the Government forces winning the day. Highland culture was changed permanently beginning with the destruction of the clans and highland culture including the way they spoke, lived and dressed and widespread violence was carried out against highland civilians and many were forced into exile or emigrated. It solidified the British State’s grip on Scotland and fortresses like Fort George were built to prepare for other Jacobite risings. However the other risings never really materialised and Culloden remains the last pitched battle fought in Britain. It’s a sombre and moving place and the 40mins or so of the actual battle profoundly changed global history. Culloden is filled with stories and ‘what ifs’ and it’s a reflective place to visit on one of our tours up to the northern highlands. c

A magical time on the Isle of Skye during the last tour - chasing waterfalls, wading in enchanted waters, having coffee in a lean-to, tasting Talisker and browsing around Portree were enjoyed by all. Scotland has so many islands that we love showing off to our guests and Skye is always a favourite but with scenery like this and a rich history, it’s easy to see why! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

A beautiful tour around the Mull of Kintyre and Argyll taking in Campbeltown (which has incredible whisky, seaside scenery, cute shops and was beloved by Linda and Paul McCartney), historic Inveraray and ancient Kilmartin which has a plethora of prehistoric sites (over 800 monuments in a six mile radius)! A gorgeous part of Scotland and one that people fall in love with 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Have you been to the Scottish Borders? This area historically saw a lot of conflict and raids and has some delightful ruined abbeys (thanks to Henry VIII ordering his troops to invade Scotland during the ‘Rough Wooing’) to explore where you can find the heart of Robert the Bruce or the burial place of Sir Walter Scott or a bagpipe playing pig! There’s also a house Mary Queen of Scots stayed in and Carter Bar on the border where cross-border justice was carried out! The Borders are a special and historic less discovered part of Scotland waiting for you! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Gorgeous was once the capital of Scotland from the 11th century until 1437 - 18 Scottish royals are buried here including Robert the Bruce and it was a centre of royal power and spiritual power (the shrine of St Margaret who in life was Scotland’s Queen Margaret was once located here). The royal palace where the last British monarch born in Scotland (Charles I) was born is a fantastic ruin to explore and the coffee at Prost is delightful! Dunfermline is also the birthplace of Andrew Carnegie and Pittencrieff Park is a delightful wander.

We love stopping here on our tours for a good dose of history and to pay our respects to Scotland’s greatest King (whose skeleton was only found in the 19th century during the building of the church onto the abbey nave!). Dunfermline became Scotland’s official 8th city in 2022 and the region of Fife is described as ‘the kingdom of Fife’ due to its royal and spiritual significance historically and the fact it was once a major Pictish kingdom called Fib and also an important earldom where the Earl of Fife once had the privilege of crowing the Scottish monarch.
