Sorbus ulleungensis ‘Olympic Flame’ (rowan) is a small, ornamental tree with strong wildlife value. It tolerates urban pollution well, making it an excellent choice for smaller or built-up spaces. It prefers moist, well-drained soil and features glossy green foliage that remains attractive throughout the growing season, before turning striking shades of fiery orange and red in autumn. In autumn, it produces abundant berries that are highly attractive to birds. A popular choice for smaller, urban gardens.

One of our favourites Cornus kousa 'Milky Way' (Flowering Dogwood). This is a real statement/feature tree. Large cream coloured petal-like bracts smoother the tree in June creating an unmistakable display, resulting in strawberry like fruits that appear alongside beautiful autumn colour. Height and spread 4-8 metres. Plant in moist but well drained, sunny/partial shade position.

As our climate shifts, choosing plants that can withstand both drought and periods of intense rainfall is becoming essential. The Met Office projects that by 2050, London could experience a climate similar to Barcelona; hotter, drier summers and heavier winter downpours.

This means the way we plant has to evolve. The trees we plant now have to be resilient to our current climate as well as our future climate. Here is a selection of hardy exotic trees to plant alongside our native favourites. Did you know that Ginkgo biloba (Maidenhair Tree) is a living relic, estimated at over 270 million years old. With its deep roots, it survived both the radiation and devastation from the comet strike which ended the dinosaur era making it the perfect tree for urban planting and climate change resilience.

The leaves are delicately fan shaped, with two leaf blades, appearing in spring a fresh bright green colour. In autumn time, these wonderfully shaped leaves turn a clear and bright golden yellow. Mature height, 17-22m.

We are celebrating World Bee Day today to raise awareness of the vital role bees play in pollinating our food and sustaining healthy ecosystems. Visit us at the nursery where our team is on hand seven days a week to help you select plants that will encourage pollinators to your garden.

We can all help bees by planting nectar rich flowers across the seasons, avoiding pesticides, providing water, and leaving some wild spaces for nesting.
