Whitby is one of North Yorkshire’s most atmospheric and characterful coastal towns, known for its dramatic cliffs, winding streets, and historic harbour that opens out onto the North Sea. Today, they stand as a striking monument to Whitby’s seafaring past and offer one of the most photographed viewpoints in the area, perfectly framing the coastline and the abbey in the distance.
It’s also a brilliant place to visit because you get a bit of everything in a small area: sandy beaches, dramatic scenery, historic ruins like Whitby Abbey, and easy access to the surrounding North York Moors. Whether you’re exploring the harbour, climbing the 199 steps, or watching the sunset through the whale bones, Whitby has a mix of history, nature, and atmosphere that makes it stand out as one of the UK’s most memorable seaside destinations.
