DESTINATION SPOTLIGHT
SRI LANKA

Sri Lanka feels like ten holidays packed into one!

You can explore ancient cities, climb through the ruins of a rock fortress, travel into misty tea country, search for elephants and leopards, eat incredible food and finish with a relaxing beach break beside the Indian Ocean.

WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL?

🏯 The Cultural Triangle, home to ancient cities, cave temples and the dramatic rock fortress of Sigiriya.

🍃 The cooler central highlands, with rolling tea estates, waterfalls and historic plantation bungalows.

🐘 Excellent wildlife experiences, including elephants, leopards, monkeys and an extraordinary variety of birdlife.

🏖️ A long and varied coastline offering surf beaches, historic towns, peaceful coves and luxury resorts.

🍛 Distinctive food shaped by spices, coconut, seafood and the island’s different regional traditions.

🚗 Enough variety for a proper touring holiday, while remaining compact enough to combine several contrasting regions in one trip.

ALEX’S TAKE

Sri Lanka is one of my favourite destinations for clients who want more than a straightforward beach holiday.

It offers culture, wildlife, scenery and food, but the journey still feels manageable. You do not need to take endless internal flights or cover enormous distances to experience somewhere completely different every few days. It is also very good value, whether you want to be part of a group or take a private tour.

The temptation is to try to see everything. I would resist that and choose three or four areas that fit your interests, leaving enough time to enjoy each one rather than racing around the island. Finishing with a beach break is a very popular option!

Some of my favourite hotels capture Sri Lanka’s variety perfectly: Ceylon Tea Trails in the highlands, Wild Coast Tented Lodge beside Yala and Cape Weligama on the south coast.

DESTINATION SPOTLIGHT
THE NORWEGIAN FJORDS
Norway

I've just spent the last week in Norway and can confirm that the fjords are every bit as dramatic as the photos suggest!

Mountains soar straight up from the water, waterfalls tumble down sheer cliffs and small villages sit right at the fjord's edge. We opted for a cruise, but there are plenty of other options - the fjords can also be explored by train, road, kayak, bike or on foot.

WHAT MAKES THEM SPECIAL?

🏔️ Extraordinary landscapes of steep mountains, deep blue water, waterfalls and glaciers.

🌊 UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord, two of the most spectacular fjords in western Norway.

🚢 A choice of larger cruises, smaller luxury ships and Norwegian coastal voyages, each offering a very different experience.

🚂 Scenic rail journeys including the famous Flåm Railway, which connects the fjordside village of Flåm with the mountain station at Myrdal.

🥾 Plenty of ways to get outdoors, from gentle walks and panoramic viewpoints to kayaking, cycling, adrenaline-fuelled RIB safaris and more challenging hikes.

🏘️ Characterful towns and villages such as Bergen, Ålesund, Flåm and Olden, each offering a different base for exploring.

ALEX’S TAKE

The Norwegian fjords are the perfect choice for anyone who wants impressive scenery and a sense of adventure without sacrificing comfort.

A cruise is the easiest way to see several fjords in one trip, particularly if you would rather unpack once. A land-based journey gives you more time to explore by train, road and on foot.

For the best of both, I would consider combining a smaller ship with a few nights on land before or after the voyage - when I visited with my family we sailed from Southampton and disembarked in Copenhagen, where we spent a few days on land before flying home.

HOTEL SPOTLIGHT
SANI ASTERIAS
Halkidiki

Sani Asterias offers the intimacy of a small luxury hotel, but with the facilities of an exceptional resort on its doorstep.

The most exclusive of the five hotels at Sani Resort, it sits between the marina and its own peaceful stretch of beach. Its newly redesigned residences and villas are spacious and elegant, with many offering direct beach access or private pools.

WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL?

🏡 Spacious beachfront and marina residences, including larger options for families.

🌊 An exclusively serviced sandy beach with shallow, clear water.

🏊 A peaceful heated pool, plus a selection of residences with private pools.

🍽️ Water Restaurant, with French-Mediterranean menus created by two-Michelin-starred chef Bruno Oger.

🎾 Access to the wider Sani Resort, including around 25 restaurants and academies for tennis, football, watersports and outdoor adventure.

🌲 A thousand-acre ecological reserve, with forest trails and plenty of opportunities to explore.

ALEX’S TAKE

Sani Asterias is a clever choice for families who want space, excellent service and a quieter base, but still appreciate having plenty of restaurants and activities nearby.

You can retreat to your own peaceful corner of the resort when you want to relax, then dip into everything Sani has to offer when you want a little more energy.

HOTEL SPOTLIGHT
BLUE WATERS RESORT & SPA
Antigua

Blue Waters is the sort of resort that people come back to year after year.

Set among 17 acres of tropical gardens on Antigua’s north-west coast, it has a wonderfully relaxed feel, with secluded pools, peaceful coves and plenty of space to find your own favourite spot.

The accommodation ranges from traditional hotel rooms to spacious suites and villas, making it suitable for couples, families and larger groups travelling together.

WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL?

🌺 Beautiful tropical gardens filled with flowers, hummingbirds and birdsong.

🏡 A wide choice of rooms, suites, penthouses and villas, including larger options for families.

🌊 Several secluded beach coves and complimentary non-motorised watersports.

🏊 Cove Suites arranged in small groups around their own shared infinity pools.

🍽️ Relaxed Caribbean dining alongside the clifftop Cove Restaurant, with its wonderful sea views.

👨‍👩‍👧 A children’s club, family activities and plenty of quieter spaces for adults.

ALEX’S TAKE

I stayed in one of the Cove Suites during my recent trip to Antigua and loved its airy interiors, sea view and shared infinity pool. There are other great options for larger groups, including the 4-bedroom Turtle Cottage at over 4,000 sq ft.

Blue Waters feels elegant but never overly formal. It works well for families, but I would also happily recommend it to couples looking for laid-back Caribbean luxury outside the main school holidays.

This is what our family holiday looks like this week…

Sailing through the Norwegian fjords aboard the brand new EXPLORA III. The scenery is every bit as spectacular as I’d hoped: sheer mountains, waterfalls, tiny villages and a new view waiting each morning.

The ship is more ike a beautiful luxury hotel than a traditional cruise ship. Super spacious, calm and relaxed, with incredible service and food. We've had a bit of 'traditional' Norwegian weather, but that hasn't dampened our enjoyment!

I’ll share a proper review when I’m home. For now, I’m making the most of those views!

HOTEL SPOTLIGHT
DAIOS COVE
Crete

Some family all-inclusives make you feel as though luxury has been slightly compromised.

Daios Cove is not one of them.

Built into a secluded natural cove on Crete’s north-east coast, the resort combines striking contemporary design, a private sandy beach and spacious accommodation with some seriously impressive dining and wellness facilities.

WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL?

🌊 A sheltered private beach and seawater infinity pool overlooking the cove.

🏡 A wide choice of rooms, suites and villas, many with their own private pools.

🍽️ Six restaurants and bars, including contemporary Mediterranean dining created with Ducasse Conseil.

🥂 Residents’ Club privileges for suite and villa guests, including meals, selected drinks, a minibar and 24-hour room service.

👨‍👩‍👧 Excellent facilities for families, with a crèche, children’s club, games room and family-friendly villas.

🧘 The 2,500-square-metre KĒPOS wellness centre, with advanced treatments, thermal facilities and a BXR London gym.

ALEX’S TAKE

Daios Cove works particularly well for families who want plenty for the children but do not want their own holiday to feel entirely child-focused.

The accommodation is stylish, the food is a real part of the experience and the wellness facilities are far beyond those of a typical family resort. It would also suit active couples travelling outside the main school holidays.
