Nosterfield Nature Reserve

Glowworms have been spotted glowing again at Nosterfield Nature Reserve in North Yorkshire, after disappearing from the area for around a century 🐛

The comeback is the result of a super cool conservation project. Hundreds of glowworm larvae were carefully raised before being released into restored habitat in 2024. Because glowworms take around two years to reach adulthood, conservationists had to wait patiently to see if the project had worked.

This summer, glowing females were finally spotted, a really encouraging sign that the reintroduction could be taking hold 🥹

And despite their name, glowworms aren’t actually worms, they’re beetles! The females produce their famous green glow to attract flying males, while the larvae spend much of their time hunting tiny snails and slugs 🐌

It’s still early days, and conservationists will need to see whether the glowworms can successfully reproduce and establish a self sustaining population

How cool is that?!
