We provide high quality, very dog-friendly, self-catering holiday accommodation in a specially designed Shepherd’s Hut so you and your dog (or dogs) can stay together. What makes us different is that as dog owners and dog lovers we don’t just tolerate guests’ dogs, we actively welcome them

and look forward to having them visit. For example we provide exercise areas right outside your door. We are based in the Cornish countryside close to many beaches, walks and local attractions. We are a sister company of the very successful Bed and Basket ®.

We’ve just had the sweetest review from a guest and her lovely dog Elli 🐾 who stayed in our shepherds hut for a short break.

Elli was straight into the paddock with a waggy tail, and they even made a trip to Tintagel to see the stunning King Arthur statue.

It makes us so happy to know our shepherds hut is a true happy place for both people and pups. 💚 We’re already looking forward to welcoming them back in the spring! ✨

How many dogs live in Cornwall?

We can’t say for certain, but with a population of around 575,000 people and national averages suggesting that about 31% of households own a dog, it’s likely there are around 178,000 dogs in the county.

(This figure might not be strictly scientific 🫣, and based on rural living, fields, beaches, and the number of dogs we all see out on walks every day, there may actually be more dogs than that in Cornwall!)

Cornwall Search Dogs currently has just under 5,700 followers. 🥰

That means we’re reaching roughly 3% of the county’s dog-owning population.

And that’s why awareness matters.

If your dog went missing, you’d want people to know how to help. You’d want neighbours, walkers, farmers, campsite owners, and café staff to recognise the name of the team who might be out looking. You’d want your community to know what to do, and who to contact.

Every time someone shares one of our posts, tells a friend about us, or simply knows we exist, it helps make that possible.

Thank you for helping us grow that awareness. It really does make a difference. 🙏🏻

As this wonderful hot weather continues do you know how to keep your dog safe?

Most dog guardians already adapt what they do in the sun. But sometimes the challenge is knowing when to stop, what signs to watch for, and what to do if something feels off.

Dogs can overheat quickly. Here are some clear signs to look for and guidance on what to do if you’re concerned:

What to look for
☀️ Excessive panting, even when resting
☀️ Dark or sticky gums
☀️ Slowing down or lying down during a walk
☀️ Unwillingness to move
☀️ Wobbliness or unsteady on their feet
☀️ Confused or glazed expression
☀️ Vomiting or diarrhoea

If you’re concerned
❗ Move your dog into a shaded or cool space
❗ Offer water, but don’t force it
❗ Cool them as quickly as possible; this is now the priority
• For young, healthy dogs: immerse in cold or cool water if possible
• For older dogs or those with health issues: pour cool water over them and use air movement (a fan or breeze) to help with evaporative cooling
❗ Contact your vet straight away, even if your dog seems to recover

Why the confusion❓

Previous advice warned against using cold water, but updated research now shows that cooling first, then transporting to the vet, gives dogs the best chance of recovery. This change isn’t yet widely known, so it can be confusing.

Every dog is different. You know yours best. But knowing what to look for and how to respond means you’ll be ready to act early, just in case.

Stay safe and enjoy the sunshine sensibly.
