Our forest school children came across this amazing puss moth caterpillar today while cutting willow for toasting forks in Bouldnor Forest, Isle of Wight. When he raised his head and waved his tails at us, one little boy said "Look at him! He's pretending to be a dragon!"

Just returned from a great walk around Appley and St Johns which I led for Friends of Appley Park. Fantastic summer's evening and beautiful sunset. Shared stories of the history, heritage and characters that have shaped the local area. A really enjoyable evening.

Looking forward to leading our Genteel East Ryde walk for the Friends of Appley Park tomorrow at 19:30, part of the Ryde Arts Festival. A beautiful part of the Island, loved by visitors and locals alike, the whole neighbourhood has a really interesting history which we will be exploring together.
£4 a head and booking essential (all monies going to Friends of Appley Park).

Thanks again to for the generous discount on their GPS devices for all walk leaders who took part in the Isle of Wight Walking Festival . Just ordered mine which has a camera too and I am really looking forward to testing it out in the field.

I know the wildlife that calls our garden home by day pretty well. There's the newts that swim about in the pond, the noisy flock......

Great walk today in and around Mottistone with a small but select group ;) The weather was beautiful and thankfully not as hot as forecasted. Here are some pictures. Also I have posted the extract from the Whippingham entry from the Mills' 'Place names of the Isle of Wight'

Explore Wight - Ancient Islanders walk today at 11am. Meet at the small car park at the bottom of Strawberry Lane, Mottistone Grid Ref SZ 412837. Not at the main Jubilee Car Park at the top of the hill or the car park near to Mottistone Manor.
