Shaftesbury's new Tourist Information Hub, located inside the Morrisons Daily supermarket on Bell Street, will hold its official opening on Thursday, 11th May. The event begins with a ribbon-cutting at 11am, followed by local product tasting from 11am to 2pm.
After the sudden closure of the previous Tourist Information Centre in March, Richard Whittemore from Elite Garages said, "The closure was devastating for the town. Tourism is hugely important to Shaftesbury, and the tourist information services needed to continue." The new hub offers PayPoint services, Collect+ parcel services, and local information.
Kelsie Whittemore commented, "We've never heard of a tourist information hub inside a supermarket before, but it was the perfect solution in this situation." She added that this unique business model could be an alternative for other tourist information services facing closure.
The Tourist Information Hub has employed former TIC manager Trevor Clements, who has also recruited volunteers to ensure a smooth continuation of the friendly service. To celebrate the opening, the hub will offer tastings of local products, including Gritchie Beer, Lilley's Cider, The Real Cure meats, Jeroboams wine, Mounters13 Shaftesbury Gin, Olives Et Al, Moore’s Biscuits and Dorset Blue Vinny cheese.
