It’s National Sibling’s Day today! A global awareness day recognising all brothers and sisters!

But it’s even more important to recognise the siblings who grow up with a disabled brother or sister, because their day to day lives often centre around their siblings needs, routines and abilities. It can be more difficult to get 1:1 time with parents, their wants often come second to accommodating additional needs, and they also often help out more around the home or with caring tasks.

Most siblings value the unique bond that they share, but it’s still important to recognise that it is a different relationship and way of life, with responsibilities that go above and beyond most children’s, and extend into adulthood too.

Today we tried to take our amazing daughter out for lunch, all together, to a place we have all stayed before and loved, but unfortunately our little guy wanted to check in and found his way to the exact room we stayed in over 2 years ago! 🤯 Impressive though this was, it unfortunately ended in a meltdown, so we had to divide and conquer again, meaning the boys headed home , and we had a girly lunch out.

This happens a lot when we try to plan things like this, so generally we go with the flow, prioritising things that we know our little guy will cope with and we will therefore all enjoy together.

So today I wanted to share the reality of living with an autistic sibling, not for attention, or sympathy, just to increase awareness of the sacrifices our daughter makes on a daily basis for her brothers happiness.

They’re both amazing siblings in very different ways, they have such a special relationship and we’re very lucky to have them both - challenging though it may be!

The 2nd April was designated as World Autism Awareness Day by the United Nations General Assembly back in 2007 to promote human rights and fundamental freedoms for autistic individuals, ensuring their equal participation in society, after highlighting a need to raise public awareness of autism.

Now more than 17 years later the global movement has expanded beyond awareness to actively promoting acceptance, appreciation and inclusion, and also recognising the contributions autistic people make.

This year’s discussion explores the role of neurodiversity in shaping policies that promote accessibility, equality, and innovation across multiple sectors. Discussions focus on inclusive healthcare, quality education, workplace accessibility, reducing inequalities, and designing autism-friendly cities and communities.

All of which are vitally important to enable autistic people to live full and varied lives.

As you know a couple of years ago I became an IBCCES Certified Autism Travel Professional, and the IBCCES are working hard to improve accessibility in various different places including education, healthcare, workplaces, travel and entertainment destinations.
