Freak Street is a small street located at the south of Kathmandu Durbar Square. This ancient street was named as Freak Street referring to the hippie trail of the 1960s and 1970s. We want to bring a taste of Kathmandu and the Himalayas to you, and decided Freak Street Cafe is the way to do it! Everything is homemade, from our dumpling dough, to our pickles, sauces and freshly ground spices. We pri
de ourselves on using authentic, fresh and vibrant ingredients reminiscent of the flavours and experiences we had in Asia. A Momo is a type of steamed dumpling which can also be fried, or 'Kothay' - fried on one side. The Momo has become a traditional delicacy in Nepal, Tibet and among Nepalese/Tibetan communities in Bhutan, Sikkim and Darjeeling district. It is one of the most popular fast foods in many regions of Nepal populated with people of Tibetan or Himalayan origin. They are wholesome, addictive and have fueled many a expedition to Everest or Himalayan trek. Momos in Nepal primarily use masala spices (cumin, coriander, tumeric etc) whereas Momos in Darjeeling and Sikkim use a mix of fresh garlic, ginger and lots of black pepper. Momos take great when dipped in spicy Nepali 'achar' (chutney) which is a tomato based sesame dip. We also make traditional Tibetan chilli and vinegar dipping sauces.
