Gutted! When you finally find that Pefect piece of luggage and then the wheels gets wrecked.

This antler hold all came to me from mum and wasn’t supposed to be my luggage of choice this summer for our Sri Lanka trip. However, the girls loved by good old Karrimor rucksack that we agreed to swap.
It was perfect, the right dimensions for my packing cubes and so easy to lug around.

So now I’m in need of another and have narrowed it down to Eastpak tarp transit 70 litres. I’m heading off again in a few weeks and need to get it ordered… despite the fact I have a perfectly good suitcase!

So my question to you are you
A. Suitcase all the way 🧳
B. Rucksack 🎒
C. Holdall with wheels
D. It depends … I have choose luggage depending on the location and type of holiday

One of the things I think we sometimes get wrong about solo travel is the word solo.

Because travelling solo doesn't necessarily mean spending your whole holiday on your own.

For lots of people, it's actually the best of both worlds.

You can make the decision to go without waiting for somebody else to want the same holiday as you…

…but once you're there, you can meet people who have chosen that trip for exactly the same reason.

You can share experiences with a group.

You can have a tour leader who knows the destination, knows how everything works and takes away some of those worries about transport, language or simply finding your way around somewhere completely new.

And — something I think is really important — you don't necessarily have to spend every waking minute together either.

The right trip can give you that lovely balance of company when you want it and independence when you don't.

That's why, when somebody tells me they're thinking about travelling solo, one of my first questions isn't simply “Where do you want to go?”

It's “How do you want to feel when you're there?”

Because there's a huge difference between travelling alone and feeling alone.

I’m not sharing this because I think everyone should book these exact hotels, stay exactly this number of nights or follow exactly this route.

Quite the opposite.

Maybe you’d want longer in Vietnam.

Perhaps Laos would be the part that fascinates you most.

You might want a food tour in Bangkok, a different beach at the end, more time travelling slowly, boutique hotels, something more luxurious, something more active — or experiences that I haven’t even mentioned yet.

This is the starting point.

You bring me the idea, the destination you’ve always wondered about, the experience sitting on your wish list — or even just “We fancy South East Asia but haven’t got a clue where to start.”

Then we talk.

Four women. Four solo travellers. Four very different drivers.

And that’s exactly what struck me most when I travelled to Sri Lanka this summer— there really isn’t one reason why a woman decides to travel solo.

This week ATAS — the Association of Touring & Adventure Suppliers — is shining a spotlight on solo touring and adventure travel.

I’m a member of ATAS, which gives me access to specialist touring and adventure operators, training, industry insight and expertise — all of which helps me give better advice to my own clients.

But some of the most useful insight comes from talking to the people actually doing it.

While I was away, I spoke properly to four women who were travelling solo.

Not just, “Are you enjoying it?”

I wanted to know why.

What had made them decide to travel without a partner, friend or family member?

Had they always been comfortable doing it?

What had they worried about?

And what did travelling this way give them that perhaps they hadn’t expected?

What struck me was that there really wasn’t a single answer.

Four women.
Four different lives.
Four different reasons for being there.

And that matters, because I think we still talk about “the solo traveller” as though she is one particular type of woman.

She really isn’t.

I’m going to share more of those conversations over in Solo but Social this week.

Not because I want to persuade every woman to travel solo.

But because if there’s a little voice in your head saying, “I’d love to… but…”, hearing from women who have actually done it might be rather more useful than me simply telling you that you should.

A Tuesday morning well spent ☕️
One of the things I don’t show enough of on here is the people, places and conversations that sit behind my business. Today started -one of my favourite coffee spots-meeting Debbie from for a good coffee, a good catch up and plenty of business chat.
I love this side of running my own business: meeting other local people, sharing ideas, supporting independents and seeing where a good conversation might lead. Travel may be what I do, but people and relationships are such a big part of how I do it.

I’m sat in my office watching the rain this morning and, if I’m honest, I’d quite like to be back in Sri Lanka or the Maldives.

Although I do have a lovely afternoon ahead catching up with a friend and going to see Scouting for Girls, so I probably shouldn’t complain too much.

Isn't it strange... the trip somehow feels surreal. Were we even there?

At the time, you’re in it, just living it.

The elephants.
The sloth bear.
Turtles coming up onto the beach in the middle of the night to lay their eggs.
Humid runs that seemed like a good idea at the time.
Bone-shaking safari trucks.
And that moment when we finally saw a leopard.

Then there are all the little moments in between. The ones that probably wouldn’t mean very much to anyone else, but will make us laugh, smile — and possibly cringe — for years to come.

Did I mention that we got to see the India v Sri Lanka Test match?

And then, after all of that, the Maldives.

Bare feet. Blue water. Slower days. Sunsets. Snorkelling. Coffee. Time together.

Two completely different parts of one incredible trip.

I think that’s what I love most about travel.

You come home with photographs, of course.

But what you really bring back are the stories which stay with you forever
