Discover the unique history and atmosphere of Sherborne School with Sherborne Walks this Summer.

Wednesday 19 and Monday 24 July | Wednesday 16 and Tuesday 22 August
Time: 2 – 4pm Meet at The Conduit (at the bottom of Cheap Street)

The tour offers a unique opportunity to access the fascinating world of Sherborne School during which we will explain how the School developed on the site of the ancient Benedictine monastery after the 1550’s. You will be guided around the historical central core of the School visiting interesting sites. Learn about some key events, traditions and people associated with the School’s development. Your guide will be accompanied by a member of the Sherborne School Events team who will respond to questions about how the School is organised today.

Over recent years, the site has been used for TV and film sets and has a surprising link to the Germans’ first bombing of a west country town in 1940. There are many insights and surprises to learn about.

The tour will conclude in The Hub Café, where the School invites participants to have a discounted Cream Tea and refreshments.

Sherborne Walks guides have been busy guiding guests around Dorset and Cornwall throughout this glorious May / June. Let's hope the settled spell lasts for a while longer.
Images from Cornwall include: Mum watched by daughter holding arsenic at Geever tin mine; a group photo across St Michael's Mount and unusual views of the Eden Project. Off to Cornwall again next week.
Look out for some new Sherborne historic town tours in July and August. They will be announced and available w/b 19th June.

'This was a visit to The Shell House in Sherborne but it was so much more. Although I have lived in the town for over 30 years I had not heard about it before as it is in private grounds. Paul was an excellent guide, he told us a great deal about the history of the town during the Georgian and Regency periods until we finally reached the our goal. The shell house itself was both beautiful and fascinating. A Grade One listed building, it is well worth a visit on the few occasions it is available for viewing.' Liz, April 2023

Visit the curious and rarely visited Grade One listed Shell House in Sherborne town centre. A few places are still available for next Tuesday, 11th April.

During this one hour tour Paul will consider the evidence for a Regency ‘Vauxhall’ garden in Sherborne. The walk will go a short distance along Long Street to look at the home of the original owners of the Shell House. We will then walk up Cheap Street and into Hound Street where the tour will conclude with a visit to the unique Georgian Shell House in Harper House.
