Turned 44 last week ✨ and I’m still sitting with the feeling. This year feels different — slower, quieter, more about presence than striving. I’m learning to want less noise and more stillness, and to notice the beauty right in front of me.
I wrote a little reflection on my Postcards from Shetland Substack - if you’d like to have a read, the line is in the profile.

Also, if you’re looking for a good book recommendation, I’ve just finished The Place of Tides by James Rebanks. It was the perfect companion for a birthday pause. It’s a lyrical reminder of resilience, tradition, and the small, steady work that truly matters.

One thought from the book I’ll carry with me into the upcoming year: we have to show up day in, day out, for years and years, doing the work… It is the only way we can make our own tiny deeds add up to become the change we all need.

Grateful for 44 years, for this book, and for the gift of slowing down. 🌊📖

Summer is slipping into autumn, but we’re still making the most of these bright days — soaking up the sunshine, walking, and noticing the little shifts that come with the change of season.
✨ If you’d like to read more, I’ve shared a new piece on my Postcards from Shetland Substack — a September reflection about the shifting seasons, the end of tour days, and the adventures ahead. It’s a mix of journal notes, photographs, and small seasonal moments that I hope will bring you a little pause and inspiration.

What does it really take to organise a knitting tour in Shetland? Part logistics puzzle, part weather gambling, part faith that everything will work out.

Our first Knitting & Hiking tour of the season just wrapped up, and I’m still processing all the magic - from persistent rain in Mousa to glorious sunshine at Culswick, from ancient brochs to contemporary makers, from raw wool processing to fine Shetland lace knitting.

There’s something special about putting half a dozen makers from around the world together in these islands that creates bonds extending far beyond the week itself. Whether you’re getting drenched in a Shetland downpour or discovering the intricacies of traditional techniques, it’s the shared experiences that make it unforgettable.

I’ve written about the beautiful chaos, the incredible people, and why these tours mean so much to me. Link in bio for the full story.

The first Knitting & Hiking 🧶🥾 group of the season was nothing short of epic! Shetland weather threw everything at us - wild gale-force winds, a day of solid rain, but also some glorious sunshine.

We explored Shetland’s most wonderful corners:
• The ancient Broch of Mousa (built c.100 BC) with
• with its bird colonies and puffins
• Dramatic Eshaness cliffs & blowholes and the rugged beauty of Northmavine
• Beautifully picturesque Culswick at the Westside
• Shetland sheep & ponies with and

And learned from the best:
• Colour inspiration from the landscape, Shetland haps, as well as a natural dyeing class with
• Mood boards and colour with Joanna at Ninian
• Fair Isle techniques with
• Yarn production process at
• Wool sorting and grading with at
• Shetland lace and with
• Pattern inspiration from and her Shetland knitwear collection.

And we were looked after wonderfully at the by the amazing and enjoyed her delicious food. And of course this amazing adventure was expertly led by Gill, our guide and driver extraordinaire.

From ancient brochs to vintage knitwear collections, from archaeological walks to cozy knitting circles - this group embraced every adventure!

What a wonderful bunch this was - thank you for being such a magical group! Already dreaming of our next island adventure.

April in Shetland brought slow mornings, sea swims, and the start of a brand new tour season. In this week’s “Postcards from Shetland” post, I’m sharing highlights from our first knitting tour of 2025—a week filled with wool, crofting, connection, and the energising rhythm of Shetland’s early spring.

We travelled from the Westside to Unst and back again, meeting inspiring makers and crofters, knitting mini haps with , learning about native Shetland sheep at , and enjoying Fair Isle and lace knitting classes with some of Shetland’s finest knitters and teachers . There were sea views, wildlife sightings, home-cooked meals by the wonderful at the cosy and the kind of conversations that only happen when you slow down together. And we loved visiting as well as .skinner

These tours are about so much more than knitting—they’re about the people, places, and stories that make Shetland so special.

🥾 🧭📍Spontaneous Day Trips: Exploring Shetland’s Coastline

One of my favourite things to do is take spur-of-the-moment day trips to different parts of Shetland. Whether it’s heading north to Unst for a day, exploring the rugged coastline of Eshaness, or discovering a small beach I haven’t been to before, these little adventures always bring something special.

With Shetland’s coastline stretching for almost 1,700 miles, there is never a shortage of walks to choose from. Every corner of the islands has a path leading somewhere spectacular—whether it’s a dramatic clifftop route, a winding coastal trail, or a quiet sandy cove tucked away from sight.

A good day trip often starts with no exact plan—just a packed picnic, a flask of coffee, good hiking boots, and a willingness to explore. Sometimes it means driving until a place feels right, other times it’s revisiting a familiar spot and seeing it in a new light.

The best part? Knowing that no matter where we go, there’s always a breathtaking view, a quiet moment to take in the vast sky and sea, and a sense of being truly present in the landscape.
