We recently dined at The Falcon Hotel and its chop house concept AcreBridgnorth and came away impressed. Acre focuses on quality British meat and seafood in a relaxed setting within the hotel

For mains, we chose the porterhouse steak and lobster. The steak was excellent quality with great flavour and a good sear, it could have been slightly rarer for us. The lobster was the standout dish of the evening – sweet, tender and perfectly cooked, making it a real treat.

The atmosphere struck a nice balance between stylish and welcoming, creating a comfortable setting for a relaxed meal. Service was friendly and efficient, adding to the overall experience.

Considering the quality of the ingredients, generous portions and enjoyable surroundings, we felt the meal was fairly priced and offered good value for money.

Acre delivers exactly what you’d hope for from a modern British chop house: quality produce, honest cooking and a great atmosphere. We’d happily return.

A really nice touch was James himself coming out at the start to chat with guests, which immediately made the experience feel personal and thoughtful.

The tasting menu was creative, seasonal and beautifully balanced throughout. Highlights for us were the scallop with crème fraîche and sansho, the Wagyu courses and the burnt yoghurt with fig dessert, all of which were full of flavour and executed brilliantly. Every course felt carefully considered without being overcomplicated.

A special mention to the sommelier, who was excellent all evening friendly, knowledgeable and spot on with our wine for the evening.

The atmosphere, service and food all came together brilliantly. A genuinely memorable meal and somewhere I’d happily recommend to anyone looking for a special dinner in a relaxed setting.

Shrewsbury’s Newest Gem Serving Big Flavour & Family Warmth 🍴🇹🇭 (invite)

Chaiya is the latest Thai spot to land in Shrewsbury, and it already feels like a real family affair-warm, welcoming, and absolutely packed with dishes that make you want to come back and work your way through the menu.

We asked for a few recommendations so we could try some of the southern Thai specials alongside the classics. We Skipped the mixed starters (even though they were calling our name) and went for pork dumplings, beef rump with a cracking spicy dipping sauce, and a bold crayfish dish with Tom yum sauce.

But the dish that completely stole the show?
The lamb shank massaman. Honestly… unreal! The lamb just fell off the bone, the sauce was rich and creamy, and we just couldn’t get enough.

We also tried the lemongrass crispy sea bass on their recommendation it was light, crispy, and lifted with fresh chillies and peppers. Gave us proper chilli‑salt‑and‑pepper vibes but with that Thai warmth running through it.

And of course, the chicken Pad Thai delivered exactly what you want nutty, fresh, and full of crunch from the beansprouts and peanuts.

If you’re in Shrewsbury and love Thai food, get yourself to Chaiya. And whatever you do, don’t leave without ordering the lamb shank massaman. It’s the one.

The Herbert Arms - Chirbury a decent drive out to the edge of Shropshire, but when you know the kitchen is linked to one of our long‑time favourites The Cross Keys - Kinnerley you set off with high expectations.

With cooking and Manager Matt running the floor, The Herbert Arms in Chirbury delivered exactly what we hoped for: restaurant‑quality food in a proper village‑pub setting.

To Start

Traditional Scotch Egg
A must‑order. No runny yolk this time, but the sausage meat was so soft, juicy and well‑seasoned that it didn’t matter. The tangy‑sweet ploughman’s pickle finished it off nicely.

Cured Beetroot Salmon
Light, zingy and beautifully balanced. The salmon was excellent quality, with horseradish cream and pickled cucumber giving it just the right lift.

Mains

Sirloin Steak with Peppercorn Sauce
One of the best steaks we’ve had cooked perfectly and full of flavour. And the sauce… silky, pepper‑warm and so well balanced we nearly ended up drinking it.

We were also treated to a little extra alongside the steak a melted wedge of local Rich, creamy and absolutely beautiful.

Tandoori Chicken Supreme
Juicy chicken with crispy skin, served with hispi cabbage and a rich, creamy, mild masala sauce. The sides were brilliant:
• Raita - clean and cooling.
• Bombay potatoes - crushed skin on, fragrant with herbs and spices, spinach folded through, and that crispy bottom layer… wonderful.

In summary everything we’d hoped for and more. Flavour, flair and serious cooking coming out of a Shropshire pub.

Meals like this remind you why it’s worth seeking out the best pubs, restaurants and chefs in the Shire. 🍴

The Blue Boar, Ludlow is a charming and quirky spot with a genuinely buzzing atmosphere that makes it feel lively without being overwhelming. It strikes a great balance between cosy pub character and a slightly more refined dining experience.

Food-wise, there’s a lot to enjoy. The rack of lamb was cooked really well- tender, flavourful, and clearly a good standard. The only slight drawback was that it was served as a full rack, which made it a bit tricky to cut and eat comfortably at the table. That said, the taste more than made up for the effort.

The steak pie was another highlight generously filled, rich, and deeply satisfying, paired perfectly with buttery mash. It’s the kind of hearty dish you’d hope for in a place like this, and it definitely delivered.

One of the standout features is the lovely courtyard outside, which adds to the overall charm and would be a great spot to sit in warmer weather.

Overall, The Blue Boar offers a warm, characterful setting with comforting food. A great choice if you’re in Ludlow and looking for somewhere with personality and a lively feel.

Visited recently. Loved the atmosphere though the food was a bit mixed with some dishes being better than others.

Gambas Al Pil Pil was okay. A subtle garlic and warm chilli flavour, but nothing that really stood out for this Mediterranean staple.

The pan-roasted lamb was served pink with a wholegrain mustard and herb crust, along with pea purée, dauphinoise potatoes, and a tasty lamb and mint jus. It was well cooked, rich & hearty. A great option for lamb lovers.

Paella Carne was rather underwhelming lacking depth of flavour and bite. More of a so-so dish than something memorable.

Mixed platter for two included large skewers of marinated chicken, piri piri pork and chorizo, and lamb merguez kebabs. The meats were cooked well and had the charred, fresh from the grill flavour you would want. The accompanying sides included dips, roast potatoes, pita with salad bringing freshness although quite small for two so had to order another Greek salad on the side.

The atmosphere was buzzing with chatter and had real soul. It felt lively and welcoming, which made the night more enjoyable.

Food wise, good highlights, but a bit inconsistent. Somewhere we would visit again, with friends or family, sticking to the dishes we could be confident would deliver. (Invite)
