Why short ski breaks make so much sense
Who says you need a full week to get your ski fix? I am a big fan of short ski breaks: think 3 or 4 nights on the slopes, often Monday to Thursday, so you dodge the busiest weekends and get more time on quieter pistes.
By flying into a major city, then choosing a resort within about 1.5 hours of the airport, you can be clipping into your skis the same afternoon you arrive. Some of my favourite city gateways for short ski escapes are Geneva, Lyon, Zurich, Innsbruck, Venice and Verona.
Ski + city: the best of both worlds
What I really love is turning a quick ski into a “mini holiday” by adding a night or two in the city at the start or end:
4-night ski break
Or 3 nights in the mountains + 2 nights in a city
Start with a couple of days soaking up café culture, winter markets and riverside walks, then head up into the mountains for fresh tracks and alpine air. Or ski first, then finish with a little city indulgence: spas, galleries and great dining.
Tried and tested favourites
Recently I spent 4 days on the summer slopes in France and it reminded me how perfect this set up can be. Resorts like Chamonix, La Clusaz and Megève, or heading up into the Dolomites or Switzerland, work brilliantly for short breaks thanks to:
Easy transfers from major airports
Plenty of character, not just “ski factory” resorts
Great food and après options, so every evening feels special
Short breaks are ideal if you want maximum skiing with minimal time off work, or if you like the idea of mixing city buzz with mountain calm in one tailored trip.
If you like the sound of a 3–4 night ski with a stylish city stay bolted on, I can design a tailor‑made short break around the way you like to travel: from chic boutique hotels to family‑friendly boltholes and private transfers that make everything seamless.
