Dating back over 350 years, Simonsbath House is the centre of what locals refer to as Exmoor proper and is the perfect place from which to explore the magic of the beautiful area, with many walks leaving directly from the doorstep. Simonsbath has seen much excitement over the yea

rs, since the Royal Forest was brought from the commonwealth by James Boevey who built his hunting lodge between 1652-4. It remained the only house on the forest until is was brought by John Knight an Industrialist from Shropshire who built the School and Church and developed the village of Simonsbath. In its time Simonsbath House has been an Inn where Smugglers were rumoured to have hidden their bounty in it, the Earl of Fortescue used it as his weekend house and evacuees stayed there in the war. Simonsbath House has only been a Hotel since the late 1960's and has managed to retain its friendly home-like atmosphere. Owners Andrew and Louise Flagg have made Simonsbath House a cosy, comfortable and a relaxing Hotel for their guests to stay in, whether that's for one night or a week. The area is a walkers paradise and Andrew, Louise and their friendly staff are on hand to ensure that you make the most out your visit. Join experienced leaders, on an exploration of the contrasting scenery of Exmoor National Park with its deep wooded coombe, heather moorland and rugged coastline. The full programme includes options to explore the many well known walks such as the Two Moors Way, Coleridge Way, South West Coast Path and the Macmillan Way. We definitely walked away the Winter Blues on our walking holiday over the weekend.

We walked 6.6 miles on Saturday from Poole Bridge to Porlock Weir, thankfully avoiding the rain. On Sunday we walked 8.6 miles from Timberscombe to Dunster.

Thank you for everyone who joined us. We hope to see you all again soon. 👋

Turning your pigs out into the local woods to feed on acorns, nuts and beech mast may seem like an archaic privilege, along with digging clay and collecting firewood, but the right to do so may belong to all of us, and may even make your electricity bill illegal.
A crucial legal document, the Charter of the Forest, is 800 years old, and it gives ordinary people in Britain their rights, rights such as keeping ponies and sheep or collecting firewood on Dartmoor and Exmoor which are still used by villagers today with ancient links, but which may mean that we should all share this country’s natural wealth.
Join science and environment journalist Myc Riggulsford for a bit of history, comedy, and some radical thinking in a fun and thought provoking debate about Devon’s past, the rights we have forgotten or allowed to lapse, and how they could help our society today.
Advance booking only. Admission £30, includes Pimms cocktail, or non-alcoholic alternative, two-course meal, Menus will be sent out on receipt of your booking. Space is limited so early booking is advised.
