I don’t mind doing the laundry one bit when I can sit and relax with a drink while I wait. 🧺🫧☕️

We don’t have a washing machine at Stone Row Cottage, so whenever we’re here we always pop to Odd Socks Cafe Launderette in Guisborough. It’s dog friendly too. 🐾

Guisborough is a lovely old market town for a wander, with the ruins of Gisborough Priory just opposite Odd Socks. And with a large M&S Foodhall, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Lidl, you can get the weekly shop done at the same time too.

✂️Autumn taming at Stone Row 🌿🌸

The clematis has had one of its twice-yearly brutal cuts again. Every time we cut it back we look at it and think, have we gone too far this time? 😆 If you’ve visited recently, you might even have had to fight it to get out of the gate.

Give it a few months though and it’ll be taking over again, and come April/May it rewards us with the most beautiful mass of flowers 🌸

The lavender has only been in a couple of years, but there’s obviously something good in the Yorkshire air — or the soil 😆 — because that too was huge when we arrived this week. That’s had a good cut back as well, ready to look lovely again next summer. 💜

We’d heard Netflix were filming in Saltburn this week, so we had to pop over for a nosey 🎬

We managed to watch one scene being shot, its amazing the amount of crew, equipment, huge lights, trucks and vans involved — quite a set-up.

Parts of Saltburn have been completely dressed for the production too. The Penny Palace signs, fruit machines, fortune-teller boards and lots of the little details in these photos have all been added for filming — even the very convincing Cash for Gold shop doesn’t actually exist.

Apparently its a new six-part Netflix series based on Roald Dahl’s darker short stories, with a pretty impressive cast including Toby Jones, Nicola Coughlan, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West and Naomi Scott.

I believe they’re filming in Saltburn throughout this week. Really interesting to see it happening — will definitely be looking out for all these places when it eventually appears on Netflix 🎥

Sheila’s shop is instantly recognisable in the foreground, with the jetty visible in the background and several more buildings here that many will remember.

❤️ Heartbeat fans might fancy a trip to the Aidensfield Arms this weekend 🍻

Goathland, less than 40 minutes from Stone Row Cottage, is a lovely village in its own right, but Heartbeat fans will know it as Aidensfield.

Tricia Penrose, who played Gina in the show, became one of the owners of The Goathland Hotel a few months ago — and she’ll be there in person on 7th & 8th September.

The pub was used as the Aidensfield Arms in the show, and they are even planning to rename the hotel The Aidensfield Arms.

If you watched Heartbeat, it must be quite surreal to walk in and see Gina actually behind the bar 😅

And just like that… they’re gone, leaving a rather strange-looking gap in this familiar view. 🐋

They’ll eventually be replaced by a full-size bronze replica, moulded from the old bones and expected to stand there for generations.

I think bronze is a lovely way forward. The arch is an important reminder of Whitby’s whaling past, without needing another pair of real whale jawbones.

Whaling may thankfully be part of Whitby’s history, but sadly it isn’t history everywhere in the world.

Perhaps the new arch can represent both — Whitby’s past and the magnificent animals themselves. 🐋
