If you teach in England, this one is worth two minutes.

The government has announced new technical education routes starting at 14. Students will combine core academic subjects with practical skills, work experience and stronger links to employers in their own area. The rollout is planned for September 2028 for future Year 9s and 10s.

Engineering, healthcare, digital, construction. Routes will be shaped locally by mayors, schools, colleges and employers, so Greater Manchester won't look identical to Norfolk.

The EU has approved the biggest update to air passenger rights in over 20 years. ✈️

From mid-2027, every fare will include a free cabin bag, under-14s will sit next to an adult at no extra cost and airlines can no longer charge you for name corrections. Your return flight is protected too, even if you miss the outbound.

There is a catch though. These rules apply in the EU and Switzerland for now, but UK departures follow the UK's own version, which isn't changing yet.

On 29th June, CERN powered down the Large Hadron Collider for its biggest upgrade since it was built. No beams for a few years, but the lab is still very much open to school groups.

Your students can still stand where the Higgs boson was confirmed, explore the Science Gateway and hear from real CERN scientists on a guided tour. And the story behind the shutdown is a great one, the LHC is being rebuilt into the High-Luminosity LHC, firing up in 2030 with ten times the collisions.

We know recent news about fuel shortages and airline route changes may be causing concern around upcoming school trips, but please be assured we’re staying in close contact with our airline partners and monitoring the situation carefully.

We’ve been running school trips since 1994 and have worked through plenty of disruption over the years. Reacting quickly and finding a way through is a big part of what we do, so we’re confident in managing situations like this calmly and effectively.

As an ABTA member and experienced school travel operator, we’ll support you every step of the way. If anything changes, we’ll contact affected groups directly and talk through the available options.
