What improvements would you like to see at Mayflower Park? 👇

Southampton City Council has responded to concerns about the condition of Mayflower Park, outlining recent upgrades and further improvements planned for the waterfront green space.

The council says it has already delivered several enhancements, including new hedge planting, fencing upgrades, additional benches, picnic seating and safety barriers to guide vehicles into designated parking areas. Further works are in development, such as new ANPR car park barriers and major maintenance to address erosion along the waterfront.

In its formal response to September’s Court Leet presentment, the council also confirmed that Mayflower Park will remain safeguarded as open space in the new Local Plan, with a long-term commitment to continue working with residents and local groups on future improvements.

A £200M energy storage facility is set to be built at Marchwood Industrial Park after planning approval was granted for a major clean energy partnership between ABP Southampton and global battery storage company BW ESS.

The project will regenerate a brownfield site and deliver a large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) designed to support both local energy security and the wider national grid. The facility will store excess electricity during low-demand periods and release it when needed, helping the UK transition toward more flexible, renewable power.

Built on around seven acres next to the Marchwood National Grid Substation, the site is expected to be operational by late 2028 and will have a lifespan of around 40 years.

Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre has been a landmark for nearly a century. It opened in 1928 as the Empire Theatre, once described as “the finest in the South” - and it’s still the largest theatre on the South Coast today.

Renamed the Gaumont in 1950, it hosted both films and legendary live music. Over the years its stage saw icons like The Beatles, Queen, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Tina Turner, Kate Bush, Elton John, Motörhead, The Who, Black Sabbath, KISS, Madness - and even Bon Scott’s final AC/DC performance in 1980.

In 1987 it became the Mayflower Theatre we know today, now home to major touring West End shows and some of the biggest productions in the country.
