We are sure that you will have seen the media reports regarding fuel for flights in the UK this week so we thought it might be helpful for you if we gave you some clarity on the situation. It is certainly true that some airlines have cancelled flights and that the total is in the area of 13,000 with the greatest impact felt on routes through Istanbul and Munich but this only accounts for just over 1% of the number of flights globally. There are a number of airlines doing this at the moment but how do they work it out? The way the airlines have done this is not rocket science. They will have looked at the routes where there were multiple flights per day
( Frankfurt to Munich for example which has 12 - 15 per day ) and will have trimmed that down to around 5 - 6 flights per day. This will allow the airline to switch passengers on to slightly earlier or slightly later flights where they have more passengers on them. This causes the least inconvenience but allows the flight to operate on the same day. UK departures, including key summer holiday routes, remain unaffected.

Here in the UK we have had tour operators come out and state that they are not going to add fuel surcharges to prices this summer but Airline UK have since also issued a clear and unambiguous statement of their own this week :

"UK airlines are operating normally and fuel supplies remain stable with good visibility. To be clear, no flights are being cancelled due to fuel shortages and reports to this effect are incorrect. UK airlines are planning to operate their full schedules this summer, including the May half-term, and are looking forward to taking our customers away. Our priority, as always, remains getting passengers to their destinations safely and on time across the full summer season and beyond."
