Day 11 — Last Day in Quito 🥲❤️🙏

Danny, my guide in Quito, told me about a hotel with natural hot springs — Termas de Papallacta, tucked high in the mountains and cloud forest at around 4,000m, about an hour outside the city. It sounded too good to miss… so of course I asked him to take me.

Let’s just say the day involved:
Hot springs.
Massage.
Mud wrap.
And a long, relaxing lunch.

The perfect way to slow down after such an incredible adventure.

On the drive back we even pulled over on the main road after someone spotted a bear in the distance — a pretty amazing final wildlife sighting.

Not a bad way at all to end an Ecuador adventure. 😎

Now for the long flight home.
Flat bed down, blanket on, and hopefully some much-needed sleep.

Day 10 — Goodbye Galápagos ❤️

Another 5am start — but this time it wasn’t for kayaking, snorkelling or hiking. It was time to say goodbye to the National Geographic Islander II and an unforgettable adventure.

On the way to the airport we stopped to see the giant tortoises 🐢 roaming freely in their protected conservation area. Watching these ancient creatures move slowly and gracefully through their natural habitat was something really special — a humbling reminder of just how long they’ve been here.

Leaving the islands felt emotional. The Galápagos truly is a magical place — raw, wild and beautifully simple, where nature leads the way.

An adventure I will never forget, and a place where I felt very much at home.

Day 9 — Almost Time to Say Goodbye 💙

San Cristóbal Island — Punta Pitt & Cerro Brujo

I can’t quite believe the trip is almost over.

I’m officially used to these 5am starts now — expedition life suits me. This morning’s wake-up call was extra special though… we had the opportunity to watch a lunar eclipse over the ocean. Absolutely beautiful. I’ve never experienced one like it — the stillness, the sky, the reflection on the water. Pure magic.

By 6am we were on a strenuous 2-mile uphill hike at Punta Pitt — steep, rocky, and a proper leg burner. But completely worth it. So much birdlife — blue-footed bo***es, red-footed bo***es, and finches darting around us. Nature just casually showing off again.

Snorkelling around Punta Pitt brought more colourful fish and that calm, floating feeling I’ve grown to love.

The afternoon at Cerro Brujo was beautifully chilled. Hours on a stunning white beach, swimming in turquoise sea, chatting with some of the incredible people I’ve met along the way. I even had a long “conversation” with a pelican… and took some quiet time to meditate and feel grateful. Truly thankful to the universe for allowing me to live out one of my dreams.

Evening brought farewell drinks and dinner with the amazing team on board. They arranged a slideshow of our photos — including Nicholas’ incredible underwater shots. Watching made me feel emotional. So much beauty — not just in this place, the animals but in the people.
I’m sad to be leaving this extraordinary corner of the world.

One final 5am start tomorrow — heading to see the turtles before flying back to Quito for one last night.

What a journey this has been. 💫

Day 5 — Galápagos Here I Come 🐢✈️

An early start and a quiet wave of nerves — that fleeting thought of being the solo traveller among couples and groups… but also the reminder that this is exactly where growth lives.

Leaving Quito meant it was time to meet some of my fellow shipmates heading to the Galápagos — and within minutes I’d adopted (or been adopted by) two lovely ladies, Gail and Jane from Michigan.

Our route: Quito → Guayaquil → Baltra.
At Guayaquil I met David from North Carolina, travelling with four neighbours while his wife stayed home… except now they gained a bonus passenger — me — so their group of five has officially become six. They’ve been unbelievably kind and welcoming, and honestly it’s making the whole experience feel even more special. Instant travel tribe formed. ✔️

Highlight of the day: uncontrollable, tear-streaming laughter with David after I confidently walked straight into his cabin thinking it was mine… only to be met with his equally confused face. (For context: earlier he’d also shouted “YES!” when they called my cabin number.) One of those moments that you simply cannot script — you had to be there, and I don’t think I’ve laughed that hard in ages.

The rest of the day has been all about settling into ship life — exploring, briefings about the islands, wine tasting (research purposes obviously 🍷), and seriously impressive food.

Now it’s an early night: 9pm lights out because tomorrow starts at 5am for a 6am hike.
Explorer mode: activated. 🌿

Ship: Islander II 🚢

Day 4 — Zip Lines, Hummingbirds & Cloud Forest Magic

5am wake-up call… not sure if it was excitement or lack of
sleep. Either way — thank you Quito for the sunshine send-off ☀️

After my final breakfast at d’Casa, Danny (guide, storyteller and absolute super star) and I headed off to Mindo Cloud Forest — Mother Nature showing off at full volume.

One minute you’re in misty air straight out of a fantasy film, next minute you’re ducking hummingbirds, butterflies, waterfalls and roughly 1.3 million shades of green. 🌿🦋

AND THEN…
Adventure Debbie clocked in for duty and — brace yourselves — I DID THE ZIP LINE.
Yes. Me. Suspended in the sky. Voluntarily.
Those who know me well are probably checking if I’ve been body-snatched.

Tubbing sadly didn’t happen because solo traveller life = not enough thrill-seekers to join me in launching ourselves into a cold, wild river. (Honestly rude of the tourists.)

Chocolate / cacao tour = dangerous territory. Learned loads, tasted everything, bought half the shop for “educational purposes.”

The hummingbird stop though? Phenomenal. Tiny winged jewels zipping around like they’ve had three espressos and a motivational podcast.

Lunch at Serenity — absolute must if you ever visit. Then into Afrodisiak cacao shop where I bravely supported the local economy (and by supported I mean shopped enthusiastically).

Honestly… what a place. Mindo doesn’t just show you nature — it resets you. Slows you down. Grounds you. Reminds you you’re alive.

Huge thank you to Danny for making the day unforgettable — guide of dreams and now a forever friend 🙏

Next stop: the legendary Galápagos Islands and I am beyond excited 🐢🌊

Travel update! ✈️
I arrived in Budapest on Friday and went through the new EES entry procedure that’s now required when entering Europe. Super easy to do, but the line moved slowly—expect around a 1-hour wait.
If you’re traveling soon, give yourself a buffer so the new system doesn’t catch you off guard!
