Today is cruise day so here is a blog from my first River Cruise Experience.
My First Danube River Cruise: A Living Postcard
An ocean cruise takes you to a country. A river cruise takes you through it.
Iâd heard that saying before, but my first river cruise brought it to life. After seven days on the Danube with TUI River Cruises, I was surprised by how much Iâd enjoyed it.
I went looking forward to comparing river cruising with my ocean cruise experiences. I came home with a new appreciation for smaller ships, personal service and the pleasure of watching the world drift past.
A Change of Plans
We flew from Manchester on Monday 28 September for our seven-day cruise. Our original Southern Danube itinerary was due to depart from Budapest, but low river levels meant changes to the route. DĂźrnstein became the furthest point we could reach.
On arrival in Vienna, TUI staff met us and escorted us by coach to the ship.
It was a reminder that river conditions can affect itineraries. You need a little flexibility with this type of holiday. Although our route changed, we still explored Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and DĂźrnstein.
TUI also provided a complimentary drinks package because of the disruption. That was a welcome gesture for our sailing, rather than something to assume comes with every booking.
My Cabin: Comfortable, with a View
My French balcony cabin sat just below reception. Despite the name, this wasnât a balcony I could walk out onto. It offered a window overlooking the river.
The bathroom surprised me. It felt spacious â larger than those in many ocean cruise balcony cabins Iâve experienced.
But the greatest pleasure was the view.
When we cruised during the day, I loved sitting in my cabin and watching the scenery pass. There was no need to rush anywhere or do anything.
It felt like a living postcard, changing before my eyes.
Food That Held Its Own Against Ocean Cruising
As a first-time river cruiser, I wondered how the dining would compare with larger ships.
I neednât have worried.
The variety and quality impressed me throughout the week. Some meals rivalled the best Ă la carte dining Iâve enjoyed on ocean cruises.
A smaller ship certainly didnât mean a lesser dining experience.
Personal Service That Made a Difference
Within a couple of days, it seemed all the staff knew my name.
The waiting staff remembered my food preferences and favourite drink. Each morning brought a friendly greeting and a question about my plans for the day.
These werenât grand gestures. They were small, thoughtful touches that made the whole experience feel personal.
I felt like someone they knew, rather than another passenger.
The atmosphere aboard was warm and welcoming, with most guests aged 50 and over. Couples and small groups of friends were well represented on our sailing.
Life on Board: A Different Pace
River cruising puts the destinations at the heart of your holiday.
We spent much of each day ashore. When berthed in a city, there were opportunities to stay out into the evening too.
That means onboard life plays a different role from an ocean cruise. The ship becomes your comfortable base between days of exploring.
After dinner, entertainment centred on the Observatory Bar, hosted by the three-person entertainment team.
This ship accommodates a maximum of 180 guests. It doesnât need a cast of 20 or 30 performers, and you shouldnât expect large theatre productions.
If spectacular shows and a packed programme of onboard activities are your priority, that difference matters.
For me, the quieter pace worked. The destinations, scenery and personal service were the stars of the show.
The Cities Were Impressive â but DĂźrnstein Stole My Heart
Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest offered history, striking architecture and plenty to explore. I enjoyed their cobbled streets and welcoming local bars and restaurants.
Yet my favourite day was in DĂźrnstein.
This small village, with its monastery and hilltop castle, left a lasting impression. The castleâs connection to Richard the Lionheartâs captivity and ransom added another layer to the visit.
It reminded me that the biggest destinations donât always create the best memories. Sometimes a smaller stop becomes the highlight of your holiday.
One Practical Detail Worth Knowing
On popular rivers such as the Danube, ships sometimes berth side by side.
Depending on where your ship sits, you may need to walk through another vessel to reach the shore.
That wasnât an issue for me, but itâs useful to know before travelling. If you have mobility concerns, discuss the shipâs facilities and shoreside access before booking.
Who Would Enjoy a River Cruise?
I think river cruising could appeal to people who feel nervous about ocean cruising. The smaller ship and relaxed atmosphere offer a different introduction to cruising.
It also suits couples and small groups of friends who enjoy exploring, good food and time together.
The key is choosing it for what it offers, rather than expecting a smaller version of an ocean cruise.
Youâll find fewer onboard distractions, but plenty to discover beyond the ship.
My Verdict
I enjoyed my first river cruise far more than I expected.
The food impressed me. The staff made me feel welcome. And those quiet moments watching the river scenery unfold were hard to beat.
Most of all, I loved the balance: exploring somewhere new, then returning to a ship that felt familiar and personal.
That saying stayed with me throughout the week:
âAn ocean cruise takes you to a country. A river cruise takes you through it.â
Now I understand why.
