🌿 Another magical morning in Borneo 🌿

🎵 After a night in our cabins, we woke to the incredible dawn chorus of the jungle. There really is no alarm clock quite like nature!

🚤 Before sunrise, we headed off to grab our 5:30am coffee before setting out on an early morning river cruise along the Kinabatangan River in search of Borneo’s famous pygmy elephants and other wildlife.

The elephants proved elusive this time, but nature always has a way of rewarding patience. We finally ticked off the last of Borneo’s “Big 5” wildlife sightings with a huge crocodile basking on the riverbank! 🐊 We were also treated to plenty of proboscis monkeys, whose comical expressions and distinctive noses never fail to entertain.

🍳 Returning to the resort, a well-earned breakfast was waiting for us. After a busy few days, the rest of the morning was spent at a more relaxed pace. Some of us wandered into the local village to get a glimpse of everyday life along the river, while others took the opportunity to unwind and soak up the peaceful surroundings. 🚶

This afternoon brings another river cruise and another chance to see what surprises the rainforest has in store. One thing we’ve learned already is that every trip out on the river is completely different!

Every day here is creating memories that will last a lifetime. 💚

When the Borneo skies have other plans… ☔🍺🛁
Today’s adventure? Swapped wildlife spotting for a balcony bath, an ice-cold beer, and front-row seats to one spectacular tropical storm. Sometimes the best travel memories aren’t the ones you plan – they’re the moments when you simply sit back, relax, and enjoy nature putting on a show.
Not exactly jungle trekking, but I’m not complaining! 🌴⚡

🌿 Part Two of the most incredible day here in Borneo! 🐘

After lunch, we headed to the mighty Kinabatangan River and our home for the next few nights – Bilit Nature Lodge.

Nestled in the heart of the rainforest, we’re staying in beautiful little cabins surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature. With a carefully planned itinerary from Newmarket Holidays, we’re making every moment count.

And the adventure started immediately! After dropping our bags, we were straight back out on an evening river cruise in search of Borneo’s famous pygmy elephants.

The river was incredibly peaceful, with stunning scenery around every bend. And then… success! We spotted a pygmy elephant emerging from the riverside vegetation. Such a special moment and one I’ll never forget.

Along the way we also saw magnificent rhinoceros hornbills soaring overhead and even a small crocodile basking by the riverbank.

Before long it was time to return to the lodge for dinner, followed by a fascinating cultural dance performance before heading to bed.

An early start awaits tomorrow, but if today is anything to go by, there are plenty more unforgettable memories to come.

Woohoo … I have WiFi … time to share some of our time here. These already seem like days ago we have been sooo busy …

🦧Borneo diary … day 3 (I think?!?🤪) Part one !!!

I genuinely can’t believe how much we’ve packed into today, so I’ve had to split it into two posts!

⏰It was an early start as we headed to the world-famous Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Before even reaching the nursery, we caught our first glimpses of a few orangutans in the trees, which immediately set the tone for the day.🦧

🩷The nursery certainly didn’t disappoint. We sat completely captivated watching the young orangutans playing, climbing and learning the skills they’ll need to survive in the wild. Once the keepers disappeared, the long-tailed macaques wasted no time in moving in to clean up any leftovers, which was entertaining to watch!🦧

Next, we made our way to the feeding platform. Sadly there weren’t many orangutans visiting today, but one mum and her absolutely adorable baby more than made up for it. We could have watched them for hours.

Before leaving, a few of us decided to adopt an orangutan through the centre’s conservation programme. So yes… Wanderluxe Travel now has its very own adopted orangutan! 🧡

🐻 Our next stop was the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre. Sun bears are the world’s smallest bear species, recognisable by the golden crescent-shaped patch on their chest. Sadly many have been rescued from the illegal wildlife trade or from being kept as pets. The centre does incredible work rescuing, rehabilitating and educating visitors about these fascinating animals while helping to protect their future in the wild.

After all that wildlife spotting, we enjoyed lunch at a beautiful local resort before beginning the drive to the Kinabatangan River and arriving at the our home for the next few nights.

And trust me… the day was far from over! More on that later… 👀
