Do you know why many castles are located right on rough coastline? In a time when wars were fought with swords and arrows, building a castle on a piece of elevated coastline was the perfect defence. Dunnottar Castle is a perfect example of this, and its rich history of being an important and sought after fortification testifies to this.
- The earliest known structure at Dunnottar is thought to be a chapel constructed in the 5th century, by St Ninian who used the site as a base to convert the Picts to Christianity. ✝️
- Donald II, grandson of Kenneth MacAlpin, the first “King of Alba” was killed here in a Viking invasion in the early 900’s. ⛵️
- During the Wars of Independence, the castle changed hands between the Scottish and English armies. Its defensive position was excellent in repelling attack, with the steep cliffs surrounding the castle claiming many lives. ⚔️
The castle is located near Stonehaven, south of Aberdeen. It’s a fantastic site which blends incredible landscape and rich history, and is a fantastic bucket-list castle for any lover of Scottish history!
