We know exactly why the Calanais Standing Stones were built...👀
This is what everyone who has ever visited Calanais wishes they could say - and we're no different!
What we do know is that they are a remarkable testament to the sophistication, engineering skills and sheer determination of prehistoric communities.
Archaeological excavations have revealed that construction began here in the Late Neolithic period, almost 5,000 years ago. ✨
Stone circles are thought to have been spaces set apart from everyday life - places where people gathered to celebrate, perform rituals and express their spiritual and religious beliefs. Some have even suggested they were places where hidden, otherworldly powers could be contained...
Whatever their purpose, raising a monument on this scale would have been an extraordinary undertaking. Those who initiated and led the project must have held a significant place within their community.
And yet, so many questions remain. What are your thoughts on what happened? 🧐
Come and explore our exhibition to discover more about the archaeology, discoveries and enduring mysteries of Calanais.
