Hidden at the bottom of Burford’s famous high street is the beautiful St John the Baptist Church ⛪✨
And it’s not just pretty… it’s over 800 years old.
Building work began around 1175, with the church developing over the next 300 years into one of the most impressive “wool churches” in the Cotswolds, funded by Burford’s wealthy medieval wool merchants.
Look closely and you’ll still spot original Norman features, including the huge west doorway and ancient iron hinges dating back to the 12th century.
The tower and spire nearly collapsed during construction in the 1400s too, and parts of the church still show where builders reinforced the structure to stop it moving further.
It’s one of those places where every corner has a story. 📜
