Day 8 – Archie and Matt Europe

Triglav Summit – We Made It 🏔️

After a solid plate of pasta bolognese at the Kredarica Hut the night before, we tried to get some sleep in the dorms – but between people coming and going all night, high winds battering the building, and pre-climb nerves, it wasn’t exactly restful 😅

Up at 4:30am, harnesses and helmets on, and met our guide Mitja at 5am for the final push to the summit. The route is a proper via ferrata – steep, exposed, and roped up the whole way. We’d watched people tackling it the day before, which only made it look more intimidating, so nerves were definitely running high.

We climbed at dawn and caught sunrise partway up, with the rocks glowing orange in the first light – an incredible sight that made the effort feel worth it. By the time we reached the summit of Triglav (2,864m) at 6:20am, we were up in the clouds – couldn’t see a thing from the top! But we were joined by a few other early risers who arrived around the same time, which made it feel like a shared, quietly epic moment.

The ridge was thin, winds fierce, and the exposure very real – but we stuck together, kept steady, and it all came together. Back at the hut for breakfast by 8am, buzzing but a bit dazed.

After that, we hobbled back down the same route we’d climbed up — a solid 3.5-hour descent with sore legs and wobbly knees all the way. Couldn’t have timed it better though — just as we were getting back to the car, a few cracks of thunder rumbled back up ant the summit and the first drops of rain started to fall. Triglav letting us know we’d just made the weather window.

Then a 2-hour drive to Zagreb to get ready for the flight home tomorrow.

Feet are done. Legs are jelly. But what a way to finish the trip - so proud of Archie for completing this challenge with ease!!

Day 7 – Archie and Matt Europe
Triglav Ascent Part 1 – Krma Valley to Kredarica Hut 🏔️

Today we started our attempt on Slovenia’s highest peak – Mount Triglav (2,864m) – with a climb from the Krma Valley (about 980m) up to the Kredarica Hut at 2,515m. A solid 1,500+ metres of elevation gain and about 7km of trail, winding steadily upwards through forest, alpine meadows, and finally up into the rocky highlands.

The weather was scorching at the bottom – classic July heat – but cooled off as we gained altitude, which made the final stretch to the hut much easier going. The scenery changed as we climbed – from dense pine forest to wide open scree slopes and dramatic limestone peaks all around.

We didn’t go for the summit today – the final ascent is a via ferrata, with cables and exposed sections, and there were some bottlenecks with people coming down. Plus, Matt is knackered 😅 so we’ve decided to rest up and go for it first thing in the morning when it’s quieter and cooler.

The mountain looks absolutely stunning but serious – rugged, sheer, and definitely demanding. That final ridge is no joke!

We’re climbing with Mitja, our mountain guide, who’s been great – and turns out we’ve got a private trip as no one else booked on, so we’ve been able to take it at our own pace (read: slowly, with snack breaks 😄).

All going well, summit tomorrow 🤞
Signal might drop so if you don’t hear from us, we’re probably just high up somewhere hanging on to a cable…

Day 6 – Archie and Matt Europe Trip
Destination: Vintgar Gorge & Lake Bled

A shorter driving day today as we headed north towards the stunning Vintgar Gorge and the ever-beautiful Lake Bled – though not everything went quite to plan.

We arrived at Vintgar Gorge and managed to get entry tickets, but had to wait a few hours for our time slot 🤦🏻‍♂️. Not a huge issue, as we’d planned to visit Bled Castle in the meantime… only to find the road up was closed (and we weren’t exactly in the mood for the uphill hike 😂).

Instead, we took a walk around Lake Bled itself, enjoyed some fresh baguettes, and made the most of the sunny morning with a slice of the iconic Bled Cream Cake (kremšnita) – can’t visit without trying that!

We did notice that swimming to the island is no longer allowed – a shame, as we did that last time and even managed to swim all the way around it. Still, the view of the church on the island remains one of the most picturesque spots in Slovenia.

Then back to Vintgar Gorge. It’s about 1.6 km long and carved out by the Radovna River, with wooden walkways that wind through steep canyon walls and pass by waterfalls, rapids, and pools of crystal-clear water. First opened to the public in 1893, it’s become one of the region’s must-see natural sites.

Access has been improved a lot, with a park-and-ride system that makes the narrow local roads easier to manage. The entry fee includes parking and shuttle transport, which actually works pretty smoothly given how tucked away the gorge is.

All in all, a beautiful spot and well worth the trip – even if it took a little extra navigating today!

We finished the day with an ‘adventure pizza’ in readiness for our climb up Mount Triglav tomorrow and Monday. If there’s no update tomorrow, we may be out of phone service – wish us luck! 🏔️🍕📵

Day 5 Archie and Matt Europe Trip…

Big drive day today! We left the stunning Plitvice Lakes in Croatia this morning — those turquoise waterfalls and lush forest trails were amazing … will hope to bring Donna and Freddie here one day though.

Crossed into Slovenia and made it to Predjama Castle by midday. This place is absolutely crazy — a real medieval castle built straight into the side of a cliff. Half rock, half fortress, like something out of a fantasy movie. Archie took one look and said, “This is exactly the kind of thing I’d build in Minecraft.” 😂

Later in the afternoon we explored Škocjan Caves — and honestly, mind blown. A UNESCO world heritage site, the caves house the largest underground chamber in the World complete with a roaring river running through it, and a suspension bridge that looked like it came straight out of Lord of the Rings. Total otherworldly vibes…. Oh and a small matter of 500 steps up and 500 down 🥵

**Unfortunately (or fortunately for you) we weren’t allowed to take any photos within the caves so all photos there are official stock ones.

Nice to be back in Slovenia and I know Archie has been looking forward to being here. What is most noticeable is how much the landscape has changed from the dry rocky ground and sunny stone streets of Dubrovnik to the lush alpine forests and caves up here. Unbelievable contrast!

Day 4 Archie and Matt Europe Trip…

A last start for once with breakfast on the seafront then headed towards Plitvice Lakes National Park with a stop off in Zadar along the way.
Zadar is another seaside town and ferry port to many islands. We expected very similar to what we’d already seen but here things were both weirdly older and more modern!
Loads of Roman influences and quite an Italian feel but also wider streets and a modern feel.
One of the modern editions was a very cool Sea Organ. Basically, a musical organ played by waves hitting the side of the sea wall which played a tune… to us it seemed that calm waves played a very melodic tune but when a big wave came it it changed to minor chords and more dramatic! - I couldn’t believe how it sounded when we first heard it… I was sure it was someone ruining the vibe with their own speaker😂

But then onto Plitvice National park …. I don’t really have the words other than ANY photo doesn’t do it justice! Lakes SOOO blue and waterfalls everywhere. We called around the park for 3 hours and probably only scratched the sides.
Imagine a cross between avatar and Jurassic park on such a big scale and thankfully we got to see it quiet (which was mainly due to our cheaper after 4pm ticket!)

Day 3 Archie and Matt Europe Trip…

Another day another country! - today we picked our hire car up and drove into Bosnia and Herzegovina to Mostar. We drove through some recent forest fire areas, which judging by the helicopter with huge bucket attached they were still putting out somewhere.
The roads mainly were really quiet and easy to drive with great mountain and valley views.
Mostar is most famous for a bridge which is 23m high above a blue (and cold) river below.
Local divers jump off the bridge for cash - and maybe fun?! … he does jump eventually in the last video!
It was not purely a bridge though with cobbled streets, shops, bars and restaurants attached to either side. It was also very cheap!
We then drove to Kravica waterfall - a really impressive sight, like something out of Avatar. Archie went for a swim in the cold water to get a better look which in the 35*c heat may have been a good idea.
After this we headed to Marina, a seaside Croatian town to stay the night.

Day 2 of Matt and Archie’s Europe adventure…

Another early start to join a guided day tour to Montenegro!
Early starts (always a bit of an effort on holiday), are often for good reason and this was no different. One good reason to be there before the daily coffee break time for border control staff (and the subsequent queue) would and the other you get the towns a little quieter when you get there.
On this trip we took in what Kotor bay had to offer. The bay or fjord is actually the second largest fjord in Europe after Norway! - and just as beautiful.
Our first stop was Perast a small waterside town with two small islands just off the coastline, one being a monestary and the other a church called “The Lady of the Lake” which we visited by boat. We also climbed the old tower for a better view.
Next onto Kotor - an old walled town with alleyways, churches, palaces, a prison, an old army barracks, squares, museums with lots of little shops, restaurants and bars.
All over looked by a fortified castle up high on the mountain side.
A great place to wonder around and take in the sights of such a well preserved town like this.
Then a late afternoon bus back to Dubrovnik for a swim and pizza was a great day!

Day 1 - Matt and Archie Europe trip

An early start from Manchester meant we were at our apartment in Dubrovnik by lunchtime which is right in the main Stradun area in Old Town. A very hot day with a trip up the cable car to see the town from above and a dip in the sea to cool things down… oh and probably the best ice cream I’ve ever had!
Old town is a maze of old stone buildings with lots of history and film locations ‘throne’ in (get it?)
