Loch Maree is already beautiful from the road, but getting out onto the water hits different 😍

The boat trips take you past wooded islands and quieter corners of the loch that you don’t really get to appreciate properly from the shoreline. There is loads of local history tied to the islands, so you come away learning a lot more about the area than you expected!

It’s a really calm few hours and a nice change of pace if you’ve spent most of your trip driving around 😊

Kishorn is a brilliant place to stay if you want to explore the Highlands without being surrounded by crowds the whole time. From Onnela Lodge, you can easily reach places like Applecross, Torridon, Shieldaig and Gairloch, then come back somewhere quiet at the end of the day.

It gives you the best of both... plenty to see nearby, but a much calmer place to stay once you’re done exploring 👏🏻

The glass-bottom boat trips in Gairloch are a really good option if you want to get out on the water but don’t fancy anything too intense.

The trips head out from the harbour and give you a chance to spot seals, seabirds and sometimes dolphins along the way, plus you can actually see below the surface through the viewing panels on board 😍

It’s relaxed, easy to do with kids, and something a bit different from the usual walks and road trips. Find out more here: https://heyor.ca/RDmAqD

Victoria Falls is an easy one to add into a day around Torridon because it doesn’t need loads of planning or a full set of hiking gear. There’s a short woodland walk down to the falls, and once you get there, the water is properly powerful, especially after rain 👏🏻

It’s definitely somewhere where you'll end up spending longer than expected because it’s peaceful without being too quiet, and there are a few good spots to stand and watch the water coming through.

It's a good option if you want to get outdoors for a bit without committing to a huge walk 😊

The kitchen and dining space at Onnela Lodge make group stays really easy. There’s loads of room to cook properly, sit together and spend the evening in one space without feeling cramped!

It works especially well after a day out when everyone’s back at different times, grabbing food, chatting about where they’ve been and settling in for the evening.

If you’re planning a trip with family or friends, Onnela Lodge is a great base for spending time together properly. Book your stay here: https://heyor.ca/sszgWm

Gairloch Museum is worth stopping at if you want a better understanding of the area beyond just the scenery. There are loads about crofting, fishing, Highland communities and everyday life over the years, and it’s all done in a way that’s genuinely interesting rather than feeling like a school trip.

It’s also right by the water, so the setting is beautiful before you’ve even gone inside! It's also a really good option for a quieter afternoon, especially if the weather’s not playing ball.

The Glenelg ferry is a good one if you’re heading towards Skye and want to do something a bit different on the way - it’s the last manually operated turntable ferry in the world!

The crossing itself is short, but the route over is lovely, and there’s usually a good chance of spotting seals nearby while you’re waiting around the slipway.

It’s much more enjoyable than sitting on the main road, especially if you’re not in a rush 👏🏻

After a full day exploring Wester Ross, the hot tub is usually the first place people head once they’re back at Onnela Lodge. It’s warm, private and surrounded by Highland views, so it’s a pretty good way to end the day.

It’s especially nice on colder evenings when the air’s freezing but the water’s hot, and on clear nights you can sit out there for ages looking up at the sky 🤩

Inverewe Garden surprises a lot of people because you don’t expect to see that kind of planting in the Highlands. There are massive palms, bright flowers everywhere and loads of winding paths through the gardens, all with the mountains and coastline around you at the same time.

It’s a really nice one to mix into a slower day around Poolewe and Gairloch, especially if you want a break from driving or walking for hours. There’s also a café there, so it works well as a lunch stop too 🙌🏻

Sands Beach in Applecross is one people tend to go back to more than once; it’s a wide stretch of sand with shallow water and views out towards Raasay and Skye, so it feels open without being exposed.

It’s a good spot for a proper walk, especially if you’ve driven over for the day. You can take your time, wander along the shoreline, or just sit for a bit and take it in. Even when it’s quiet, it never feels empty; there’s always something going on with the water, the light or the weather.

There’s also a small rock shelter nearby that dates back thousands of years, which adds a bit of history to the visit without needing to go out of your way. Find out more here: https://heyor.ca/iZxPuI
