Our picture shows AMC rider John Clark aboard his Matchless G45 at the Easter 1956 meeting. Following Saturday practice, race day was on Monday, April 2, with the site bathed in glorious sunshine. The biggest talking point among the 26,000 spectators present was not any one of the 163 riders entered; it was a machine. John Surtees was set to ride the exotic 500cc MV Agusta four, the recent signing making his British debut on the machine at the meeting.

It’s one of the machines heading to the Bonhams Autumn Stafford Sale at The Classic Motorcycle Mechanics Show, sponsored by Carole Nash, at Staffordshire Showground on 10–11 October.

Alongside the Bonhams auction, there’ll be more than 900 traders, dealers and autojumble stands, huge club displays, racing machinery, the Classic Racer GP Paddock and live entertainment.

Special guests Niall Mackenzie and James Whitham will also be appearing across the weekend.
