Final night in Kerala
Our last evening at Marari Beach was spent exactly as it should be: sharing memories, laughter and great food with colleagues, friends, travel partners and the wonderful hotel team who’ve looked after us so well. We were all so happy to have the opportunity to wear traditional Kerala saris for our final night, which made it feel even more special.
Such a privilege to explore southern India: the colours, the sights, the sounds, the flavours… it is a place that gets under your skin in the best possible way.

India Diary Day 9 🇮🇳🪷
After the colour, flavours and sounds of our Kerala multi centre trip, it is now time for unwinding for two nights at Mararikulum. We are staying at the peaceful Marari Beach Hotel, just 30 minutes’ drive from Aleppey.
Think lazy hours by the pool, relaxed beach café, treatments in the spa and gentle activities like owl spotting, nature walks and cooking demos with local ladies. It is the perfect slow, ending to a Kerala adventure and a lovely place to recharge before flying home.

🇮🇳🪷🍃Day 8 of my India diary: Cruising through the backwaters -
Day 8 took us from our Kumarakom hotel to Mari Beach, our onward destination.
Travelling slowly through the peaceful backwaters from Kumarakom to Alleppey and then a short road transfer to Mararikulam. Our houseboat for the day was a beautiful traditional vessel.

🪷Houseboats here come in all shapes and sizes.

🪷Enjoy a relaxed day cruise with lunch, Or choose to stay onboard for 1 or 2 nights

🪷Boats range right up to around 9 bedrooms, perfect for families or small groups.

The pace is slow and serene, with life unfolding along the riverbanks as you drift past. It is incredibly calming and a lovely way to travel.
We sailed across Vembanad Lake, which is so vast it feels like the ocean and is in fact the largest lake in Kerala.

🪷🇮🇳Golden hour on the backwaters at Coconut Lagoon ✨🌅
The evening’s highlight: the complimentary sunset Shikara canal cruise at Coconut Lagoon, available every day for guests.
Gliding quietly along the backwaters, we passed endless rice fields and carpets of lilies, with trees perfectly reflected in the still water. Life along the banks: local families doing their washing, small villages tucked under the palms, children playing in the water, elegant herons, busy cormorants fishing, and even a Kingfisher.
As the sun sank and the sky turned shades of gold and rose, we gently cruised past traditional houseboats, their lanterns beginning to glow. A peaceful, soul-soothing way to end the day and soak up the magic of Kerala’s backwaters.

India Diary Day 7 part 2 🇮🇳🪷
Arriving at Coconut Lagoon in Kumarakom felt utterly magical. You cross the lake by boat, glide along the backwater canals and step ashore to the warmest welcome.
Set right on the water, this peaceful hideaway is surrounded by lush gardens, water lilies a butterfly garden and little canals. There are cosy bungalows and lakefront pool villas with private pools looking straight onto the backwaters, all with outdoor bathrooms.
Days are filled with yoga, birdwatching, cycling, canoeing, cooking demos and sunset shikara cruises, or simply relaxing by the pool and soaking up the sounds of nature. With its focus on sustainability, organic farming and calm, slow days on the water, it is the perfect place to switch off and reconnect.
Of course local authentic food is on the menu as well as afternoon tea in the backwaters. The “tea lady” arrives with her little mobile tea stall, pouring fragrant chai and sharing a smile as the sun sets over the water.

🇮🇳Day 7: India Diary
Thekkady to Kumarakom - driving through the many faces of Kerala.
We left Thekkady behind and again passed through beautiful scenery, tea and coffee plantations and local townships- as local life unfoldeds : men in traditional dhoti and kurta, women in saris, and children in uniforms making their way to school.
Further along, the landscape shifted to rows of rubber trees and spiky crowns of pineapple plants, each turn in the road revealing something new.
A stop at Pattumala Velankanni Matha Church, before we continued on past wide green rice fields and ponds dotted with delicate water lilies.
Rice is the lifeblood here, and even the lilies keep to a rhythm: opening to greet the morning, then closing again as the day moves on.
Another beautiful snapshot of everyday life in India, where simple moments tell the richest stories.
We then transferred to boat along the backwater canals to our next hotel
