Pompey died more than 300 years before Pompey’s Pillar was built. So why does one of Alexandria’s most famous monuments still carry his name? 🤔

The answer is more interesting than a simple historical mistake.
The towering granite column was actually dedicated to Emperor Diocletian and once supported a colossal statue of the Roman ruler high above the Serapeum, one of ancient Alexandria’s most important religious complexes.

Centuries later, the statue was gone, the inscription was damaged and travellers were left to interpret what remained. Somewhere along the way, Pompey entered the story and the wrong name endured.
