Air scenting is one of the ways that dogs can gather information from their environment, but why do they choose to do it, and what can it tell us?

Has your dog ever stopped on walk and held their nose high in the air, their nostrils twitching? If so, you've watched them air scenting. Sampling odours in their environment and processing it, before taking action. This may be to chase, hunt, or maybe even get some distance from the scent. In scentwork, their behaviour can tell us A LOT.

No two dogs will work the same, and they can adapt the way they search according to the information available to them and the environment they're working in. Jinn, Connor and Jacobs (2020), for example, found that environmental conditions influenced dogs' search behaviour while following trails, including how closely they searched in relation to the trail.

Temperature, humidity, wind, terrain and the movement of air can all influence where odour is available. So when we watch a dog lift their head, change direction or suddenly put their nose back to the ground, we may be watching them solve a constantly changing scent problem.

Understanding how dogs search, rather than simply whether they find the target odour, is one of the things that makes the science of scentwork so fascinating.

Well what a weekend we had at . 3 days of fun, dogs, incredible demonstrations and meeting so many lovely people that we hope to meet again!

So many complete newbies enjoyed some our Scentwork demo, with their dogs trying and loving their very first taste of searching. We had all sorts of breeds and ages of dog, from little pups to real golden oldies!

We had such a fantastic experience and it was an incredible atmosphere, and we cannot wait to do it again next time.

We've got more ideas for next year, and we cannot wait to see some of you on our courses next year. What a great weekend!

Our courses at The College of Scent Dogs focus on the fun, the theory, the relationship with your dog, the practical problem solving. We'll teach you how to adapt and accommodate different dogs, different handlers, different environments.

It's not a one-size-fits-all, there's no 'Do it the college way'. We teach you the concepts of scentwork, and how to apply them to the dogs you teach, whether that be as an instructor, or as a dog owner.

Along the way, you'll make friends, build confidence and enjoy the unique and exciting venue we get to train in. And of course, the City and Guilds qualification to show your hard work, as well as knowing we're both an assessing and practitioner organisation of the ABTC. You cannot find this level of support, experience and knowledge anywhere else in the scentwork world.
