Be extra careful on the loch. The wind can change quickly, and waves build rapidly when air is funnelled along 26miles of glen. Theres no emergency response stationed on the loch so help can take a long time to come. Please read https://www.lochawe.net/safety/ before taking to the water.
Please stay safe when enjoying water sports this summer. Although the air temperatures may be warm, the water rarely is. Cold water shock can trigger involuntary gasps of air and rapid uncontrollable breathing which makes it difficult to keep your airways clear and stay afloat. If you find yourself unexpectedly in water, remember FLOAT TO LIVE! lie on your back, submerge your ears slightly below the water and extend your arms and legs out in a starfish shape.
To stay safe, follow this easy advice:
⛵ Avoid going alone, and if you do then tell someone where you are going and how long for.
⛵Wear an appropriate wetsuit/drysuit and lifejacket/buoyancy aid
🏊 Enter the water slowly to allow your body to acclimatise
🏊Use a brightly coloured swim cap and tow float when open water swimming
📱Call 999 and ask for the COASTGUARD for emergencies at sea, on the coast or on Loch Ness. Ask for the police for all inland search and rescue.
