The last time I stood here was in 2020, when I was living on Skye. My father had just left this realm, and I poured my grief into these lands, letting the mountains and waters hold me in that time of deep loss. To return now with my beautiful, well travelled client Jolanta feels like a circle closing, to walk these powerful places together is a gift. Tomorrow we have been invited to greet the dawn at a sunrise equinox ceremony with the Tuatha Dé Danann.
Sligachan is a place of living magic. Beyond the famous bridge with its sweeping views of the Cuillin Hills, it is the waters that hold the true enchantment. Legends tell of Scáthach, Scotland’s legendary warrior woman, who trained the greatest fighters at Dunscaith Castle. When the Irish demi god Cú Chulainn came to challenge her, their battle raged for days until Scáthach’s daughter, Uathach, turned to the fairies for help.
The fairies blessed her, and through love and wisdom she prepared a feast that brought the two warriors to pause. By breaking bread together, they honoured an ancient law of hospitality, and the battle ended in peace. Uathach’s tears and the fairies’ blessing remain in the waters of Sligachan, and it is said if you kneel by the bridge, submerge your face for seven heartbeats, and let the water dry upon your skin, the fairies will gift you with their eternal beauty.
