💫Upcoming changes for travel to Europe 💫
changes being made by The European Union, in relation of the Entry and Exit System (EES).
For passengers planning to travel later this year or next year, we’ve provided some guidance on what they need to know about the upcoming changes.
The proposed implementation was 10 November 2024, however this has been delayed.
The EES is an electronic system that will track European border crossings, replacing the need for manual checks and physical stamping of passports.
The first time you use the EES they will scan their passport at the automated gates on arrival into Europe and they will have their fingerprint scanned and photograph taken - this will be kept on file so they will not have to do this extra step each time they go to Europe. Irish passport holders are exempt from the EES. If customers are a British passport holder but have EU residency, they are also exempt from the EES.
If you are travelling by Eurostar, the EES system will be in place at St Pancras, and they will not need to be checked again on arrival in Europe.
Our Trading body ABTA have put together some useful information on their website which you can find on https://www.abta.com/tips-and-advice/planning-and-booking-a-holiday/upcoming-changes-travel-europe
Please take some time to review these changes and perhaps pass this link on to your customers.
Whilst eventually the EES will make going through passport control easier, there is the potential for queues and delays when the system is first introduced as the initial registration may mean it takes longer to process passengers. We have been advised that during the first six months border officers will have the flexibility to adapt the application of the EES to manage any queues. For customers who you are due to travel once the EES system has been implemented, we recommend that they allow extra time for airport security as queues are likely for a few months.
The EES should not be confused with the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) which is the planned European visa system, which is due to be launched mid-2025. We will post an update when there is more information to share with you in relation to the ETIAS.
