This one was an early start to beat the heat in that crazy heatwave a couple of weeks ago, just me and the dog, heading up through Uffculme before the day got going.

Park up in the village, walk up past Magelake, and keep going up until you find a gate. Then follow the footpath up past fields and into the woods. Simple as that.

Stroll along the bridlepath up on Gaddon Down, pausing to look through the trees to your right for great views back over Uffculme, you can spot the church, the old brewery, and the distinctive chimney of Coldharbour Mill.

Take a little detour into Slow Jack's Woods, small, quietly magical, and on a early morning, completely ours. Just the sound of squirrels darting through the trees and the chatter of birdsong. Lovely and peaceful!

We kept it short this time, but there are plenty more footpaths and country lanes around Uffculme to explore, we'll definitely be back.

If you haven't heard about The Peryton yet, allow us to introduce you. Tucked down a side street just on the edge of the town centre (which feels pretty appropriate for a folklore-led tavern), this is Tiverton's newest restaurant, and it's already generating plenty of buzz.

The interior has been completely transformed from its previous life, and the inside is cosy and intimate, with more space than you might expect, with more rooms appearing as you're led in to your table. Perfect for a good evening with good company.

The menu is Japanese - Mexican inspired fusion, small plates. Basically, think tapas style, two or three per person depending on how hungry or curious you're feeling, because which honestly it just means you get to try more of the delicious things on offer in one go!

I had halloumi tacos, sweet corn fritters, and we shared some nachos, and at one point we literally stopped talking because we were far too busy enjoying the food, which can only be a good sign!

The drinks menu looks good too, with lots of choice, I had a mocktail (it was a week night after all!) which was fresh and tasty, and complimented the food nicely.

Friendly, attentive staff, great value, and something genuinely a bit different for Tiverton. We'll absolutely be recommending this one in the TIC to visitors. Go and support it!

Happy Devon Day!

Today is Devon Day, and honestly, do we need much of an excuse to celebrate living somewhere this beautiful?

From rolling green hills and ancient woodland to sweeping moorland and hidden hillforts... from bluebell-carpeted valleys to canal towpaths, and coast paths with sea views stretching as far as the eye can see. Independent bookshops, canal-side cafes, farm shops, village pubs at the end of a muddy walk... Devon has it all, and Mid Devon sits right in the heart of it.

We're probably a bit biased, but we think this is one of the finest corners of one of the finest counties in England and think we're pretty lucky to live here.

We'd love to know... what's your favourite place in Devon? Drop it in the comments!

We know, we've been spoiling you with sunny photos lately. But here's the thing: how do you think the South West stays so gloriously green? 🌧️

A couple of weeks ago we headed just across the Somerset border (I know, sorry!) to Haddon Hill and Wimbleball Lake right on the edge of Exmoor National Park about half an hour from Tiverton, and honestly, the rain only added to it.

There's something about a rainy day walk though right?! The quiet of it. Just the shush of your own waterproofs, the patter of rain on leaves, and that smell of wet earth. And some places are just made for a moody sky.

From the car park you can follow moorland trails through gorse with views across Wimbleball, or drop down into beautiful mixed woodland, firs and oaks, winding paths, interesting lichen clinging to everything. We headed down to the dam to watch the water shooting dramatically out of the outlet from the reservoir, then slogged back up the hill for views across the lake.

Oh, and we heard a cuckoo in the woodland, so keep your ears open!

When you're ready to head back, the car park has toilets and a coffee van, which after a wet moorland walk feels like an absolute luxury.

A brilliant half day out from Tiverton, and worth it rain or shine.

Outdoor Shakespeare is coming to Tiverton!

One for the diary - The Comedy of Errors by The Festival Players is coming to Tiverton Community Arts Theatre on Sunday 28th June.

One of Shakespeare's funniest and most gloriously chaotic plays... twin sons, twin servants, a shipwreck, mistaken identity, and mayhem from start to finish. A perfect summer evening out.

Bring a picnic, bring a blanket, and settle in - there's a licensed bar open throughout too.

Oh, and The Festival Players have a rather impressive patron in Dame Judi Dench. Just saying.

🎟️ Tickets are £15 - book through the TIC at Tiverton Museum and pay no booking fees!

Outdoor performance - moves indoors if the weather has other ideas.

Exe Valley Way Stage 5 - Tiverton to Bickleigh (and the bus home!)

One of our favourite recent walks, and a really satisfying one because you don't have to retrace your steps... you can get the bus straight back into Tiverton from Bickleigh!

You start in town, heading down St Andrew Street past some interesting buildings, before you're quickly out into countryside along Collipriest Lane, and then (past the waterworks, which is the least glamorous bit, we won't lie) into gorgeous wooded paths with the River Exe meandering alongside you. Sometimes below, sometimes right beside you, with ferns, a lovely variety of trees, and that wonderful sound of moving water throughout. We spotted an egret along the way too!

Open fields, evidence of an old footbridge, and then into Bickleigh where history buffs will enjoy spotting the traces of the old Exe Valley Branch Line railway.

In Bickleigh itself it's worth knowing about Valleyside Escapes (beautiful glamping in a stunning peaceful riverside location) and the Devon Railway Centre, a brilliant family day out for train lovers of all ages.

Then it's over the iconic Bickleigh Bridge to the Fishermans Cot for a well earned drink in the garden, watching the herons on the river. Dogs are welcome in the bar and outside.

To get home, the 55 bus back into Tiverton Bus Station is easy and straightforward, and well behaved dogs are welcome on Stagecoach buses at the driver's discretion on a lead.

A genuinely lovely day out, almost entirely from the doorstep.

A gentle circular walk that starts and ends in Tiverton... and one where you might just round a corner to find a horse walking towards you along the towpath. (Like we did!)

Start near Blundell's Road and follow the old railway track out of town, a flat, easy tree lined path following the old railway line that eases you gently into the countryside. There are a few points where you can cut up onto the canal if you want a shorter route, which makes this walk as long or as short as you like. The full circular is around 3.5 miles.

At the end of the railway line, head up to Manley Lane and then drop down onto the Grand Western Canal, turning back towards Tiverton.

One thing that makes Tiverton's canal a little special is that the basin sits above the town, so as you walk back you get lovely views across Tiverton and the surrounding countryside, with the Knightshayes estate visible on a neighbouring hill in the distance.

Keep an eye out and you might encounter one of the shire horses that pulls the Tivertonian, the horse-drawn barge run by Tiverton Canal Co which is a pretty magnificent sight.

Once you reach the basin, you've earned a sit down. The Duck's Ditty Bar, a cafe bar on a fixed canal barge, with tables alongside, is a lovely spot to relax with a drink looking out over the water. Or head just down the hill to the Canal Tea Rooms and Garden for good ice cream, or a full afternoon tea if you're feeling indulgent!

Practical note: there's a small free car park on Old Road, not far from the railway track entrance.
