Uffculme sits within the Blackdown Hills National Landscape, just minutes from Junction 27 of the M5, making it one of the more accessible escapes in Mid Devon. Two highlights are well worth your time: Coldharbour Mill, a fascinating working heritage site set in a beautiful riverside location, and Bridwell where herds of fallow and red deer roam freely and the Orangery Café is open daily.

Walkers are spoilt for choice too, Gaddon Down, Hackpen Hill and the old Culm Valley railway path all offer excellent routes through lovely Blackdown Hills countryside.

Stoke Canon is easy to drive through without stopping, but find the footpath near the railway level crossing, and you're quickly into a varied and rewarding short route through fields, woodland, wildflowers and alongside the river, leading to Brampford Speke, a picturesque village of thatched cottages and quirky details worth taking your time over.

History enthusiasts will spot signs of the old railway branch line along the way, including former station houses, adding an extra layer of interest to the route. The return leg follows a quiet country lane back to Stoke Canon, with the mainline railway not far away, there's something unexpectedly satisfying about a train briefly cutting through the peace of the day.

A lovely, varied circular with plenty to notice along the way.
