The sun shone brightly yesterday - a rare occurrence this year! We had a beautiful day on Iona, but a highlight was our visit to Ardalanish - Isle of Mull Weavers en route. It’s a stunning location with some fabulous coastal walks. I’m seriously considering adding this to the Mull Magic itinerary next year.

Here are a couple of Mull’s late summer orchids. Both can be hard to find for different reasons, but it’s definitely worth keeping an eye out for these beautiful wild flowers.

Bog Orchid is the UK’s smallest orchid species. It’s easily overlooked standing at just a few centimetres tall and is thought to be pollinated by small flies such as gnats and midges.

Irish Lady’s-tresses doesn’t flower every year and never seems to appear in exactly the same place twice. The Gaelic name for this orchid, Mogairlean-bachlach bàna, describes (somewhat poetically!) the way the pale flowers seem to wind their way down the stem a little bit like ringlets of fair hair.

Everyone loves a Heilan Coo or two! We saw White-tailed eagles today, along with adders, seals, Curlews, and a plethora of seabirds and wild flowers. But, these Highland cows stole the show!

I’ve never seen the Isle of Mull looking quite so resplendent in bluebells. I’ve also never seen as many Chequered skippers on the island. Seeing as these exquisite butterflies will nectar on the bluebells, along with bees and many moth species, I maybe shouldn’t be too surprised.

A particularly special walk this week to the Isle of Iona. We left Tobermory in dreich conditions but were blessed with blue skies, sunshine, Spring squill and Corncrakes on the sacred isle. St. Columba’s luck was definitely shining down on us.

Although the scheduled walks don’t commence until the end of the month, I’ve been busy with research and the occasional private tour. We had an incredible day yesterday in the mountains, with my favourite bird, the Ptarmigan.

A very belated Happy New Year to all the Mull Magic walkers, friends and followers.

The Mull Magic scheduled walking tours will commence on 29th March which just so happens is the official start of British Summer Time. Fingers crossed for some good walking weather.

I’m still doing private tours during the Winter months, so please get in touch if you’d like to see some of Mull’s wonderful wildlife and scenery.

We enjoyed a true wilderness walk in the hills above Lochbuie yesterday. A tad windy at times, but the landscapes and scenery on the South of Mull are amongst the finest on the island.

The sunshine is back and we’ve encountered some rather beautiful flowers on the recent mountain walks.

The pink flower is Hairy stonecrop, so called as its reddish coloured leaves are covered in tiny hairs.

The solitary white flower, Arctic sandwort favours rocky knolls, fine scree and mountain ridges. This plant seems to be in dramatic decline so it was a special day to encounter this for the first time.

The cluster of white flowers, Northern Rock-cress, was another rare find. But even rarer is the moth that feeds on it, Plutella haasi. It took over 2 hours of searching to find this tiny moth. A very special day for Mull Magic.
