Mountaineering History in Torridon 🏔️📖

At Climb Torridon, we believe that understanding the history of our mountains makes every ascent more rewarding. We don’t just guide routes; we follow in the footsteps of the pioneers who first explored these ancient sandstone peaks. 🧗‍♂️

By happy coincidence, it is World Book Day, and we have something very special to share. Tom, a long-time climber who recently returned to winter climbing for a refresher course after some years away, surprised us with an extraordinary gift: an original 1932 first edition of The Northern Highlands by W. N. Ling. ❄️📚

For a mountaineer with Tom’s deep appreciation for history, this was a thoughtful find. For us, it is a piece of our daily lives bound in cloth.

A Connection Across a Century ⏳
William Ling’s legacy is woven into the very crags we guide on. Most notably, the classic Lawson, Ling and Glover’s Route remains a cornerstone of our winter season. ⚒️

The Route: A magnificent 3-star Grade II that stands as one of the finest of its grade in Scotland. ⭐⭐⭐

The Experience: While a route of this quality on Ben Nevis would see constant traffic, here in Torridon, it remains hauntingly quiet. 🌬️

We guide this route multiple times every winter, yet we rarely share the crag with anyone else. That solitude—the "quiet mountains" experience—is exactly why we do what we do. Holding a guidebook from 1932 that describes these same buttresses reminds us that while gear and techniques change, the spirit of Torridon remains untouched. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

A massive thank you to Tom for his incredible generosity and for a fantastic few days on the hill. It was a real privilege to have you on our course for your return to the winter mountains, and this book has already found a very proud home on our shelves.

Another epic week among the Torridon giants! 🏔️❄️

Huge congratulations to this week's crew on our Winter Mountaineering Course. They started the week with some character-building Highland weather and finished with some incredible progress on the snow.

Watching the confidence grow is exactly why we do this. From mastering crampon footwork to navigating that tricky winter ropework, everyone absolutely smashed it. Well done, team! 👏

The big question: Torridon is looking world-class right now. If you could pick just one winter route to tick off your list before the season ends, what would it be?

🏔️Winter at The Old Inn, Gairloch is a season of adventure and activity!

We’ve been the dedicated basecamp for Climb Torridon, hosting their latest climbing and mountaineering courses. It’s been fantastic to see guests returning each evening from the legendary peaks of Liathach, Beinn Eighe, and An Teallach with plenty of stories to tell.

(Swipe to see the action from the hills! ➡️❄️)

These photos give you a glimpse into their world—mastering the technical skills needed to navigate the Torridon Mountains at their most dramatic. ❄️

For those joining these courses, the Inn provides the ultimate "mountain-to-fireside" experience. It’s where the day’s work is rewarded, as our guests:

It has been another fantastic and busy week in the Scottish Highlands!

Despite some challenging winter conditions, our team has been all over the country helping climbers sharpen their skills and embrace the elements.

Here’s a brief round-up of our week:
❄️ Iain was out on Fionn Bheinn on Saturday, teaching essential winter skills.
❄️ Robin, Andy, and Mark were out for our annual 4-day winter course with the Bath University Mountaineering Club. Based in the Cairngorms, the team stayed flexible to avoid the extremely high winds, venturing further west to Creag Meagaidh and Stob Bàn. It was great to help these enthusiastic students develop their winter mountaineering journey!
❄️ Ollie was out on a private bespoke winter mountaineering course, instructing on the mighty Liathach and traversing the Black Carls on Beinn Eighe.

A week of great variety and expert instruction all over the Highlands. Roll on next week! ⚒️

Thank you to Ollie and Mark for the photos.

Last Week in Torridon: Intro to Winter Mountaineering

We have just finished a five-day Intro to Winter Mountaineering course here in the North West Highlands. It was an excellent week of progression with our clients, Luke and David, as we moved through classic terrain and developed technical skills.

A standout aspect of the week was the solitude; we did not encounter another soul on the mountains for the entire five days. This remains a key part of the Climb Torridon experience, allowing for a focused and immersive learning environment.

Weekly Highlights

• Days 1 & 2: We began on Liathach with an ascent of Footless Gully, followed by a day of essential snow craft: mastering crampon technique, ice axe self-belay, and the mechanics of snow anchors.

• Day 3: A move to the Black Carls on Beinn Eighe to focus on rock protection, alpine-style movement, and rope management using coils.

• Day 4: A milestone day at An Teallach, where both participants successfully completed their first winter leads on the Second Prong in Grade II conditions.

• Day 5: To escape the increasing winds, we utilised Tollaidh Crags to refine technical ropework, prusiking, and equalising complex anchors with ropes and slings.

Conditions & Safety Note
Snow conditions improved steadily as temperatures dropped. While the weather was generally good, we saw a significant increase in wind speeds toward the end of the week.

Note for those heading out: There is currently a glitch with the Met Office app, with reported wind speeds appearing lower than reality. We strongly advise cross-referencing your planning with MWIS for the time being to ensure you have an accurate picture of the conditions.

Well done to Luke and David on a productive and successful week in the hills. 🏔️❄️

ONLY 2 SPACES REMAINING 🏔️ | Torridon: Feb 7-8

Ready to step up from winter walking to mountaineering?

We have just two spaces remaining on our 2 day Introduction to Winter Mountaineering course this February.

If you’re a capable winter walker ready to move onto steeper terrain, exposed ridges, and those classic hidden gullies, this weekend is designed for you. Across two days in the heart of the Torridon giants, we focus on bridging the gap between winter hillwalking and technical mountaineering.

What we’ll cover:
Precision: Mastering crampon work on varied Scottish terrain.
Security: Polishing ice-axe arrests and movement on steep ground.
Technical Skills: An introduction to rope systems for exposed ridges.
Judgement: Developing the knowledge to read snow, rock, and the Highland weather.

The Torridon Environment: There is a raw, expansive quality to winter in the North West. Torridon offers a sense of genuine scale and isolation—from the unique profile of these classic mountains to the vast views over the loch and the satisfaction of finding your line through big, complex mountain terrain. It is a quiet, world-class arena to build your confidence and step up your winter skills.

📅 Dates: 7-8 February 2026
📍 Location: Torridon, NW Highlands
💰 Price: £330

These are the final two spots available for this date. If you'd like to join us for a proper Highland adventure, you can find the full syllabus and booking details below.

A selection of photos from last week, taken on the hill by our instructors, Ollie and Alex. 📸

The snow is in good condition across the Torridon mountains at the moment. This provided a great environment for Alex’s three-day Winter Mountain Skills course, with plenty of opportunities to learn new skills and techniques. 🏔️

Meanwhile, our Intro to Mountaineering and Climbing courses found some excellent days on the higher tops. Highlights included George III (IV, 4) on Liathach and Lawson, Ling & Glover’s Route (II) on Beinn Eighe. 🧗‍♂️

Despite the fantastic conditions up here, it remains blissfully quiet. In fact, we didn’t see another team all week, leaving us to enjoy these iconic routes entirely to ourselves. ❄️
