Prestwick Aviation Tours

Prestwick Aviation Tours We offer varied tours where we tell the fantastic story of the aviation site at Prestwick in Scotland. Welcome to Prestwick Aviation History Tours.

We provide varied walking tours of the perimeter of the fantastic aviation site at Prestwick Airport in Scotland. Even from the perimeter we can take you through the ages at Prestwick from the first aviation related activity in 1913 through to the varied aviation activities of today. We will relate stories of the early aviation pioneers in the 20s and 30s, the vital role that Prestwick played in W

orld War 2 and the Cold War, the development of aircraft manufacturing on site and the boom in transatlantic jet travel during the 60s, 70, and 80 which took many Scots and their families to carve out new lives in the US and Canada. Similarly many US and Canadian citizens came in the opposite direction either as tourists seeking long lost ancestry or as Military Service personnel to serve their time at the bases at Prestwick, the Holy Loch, Edzell and others. We will also share with you the tragedies and the tough times times that Prestwick has endured over the years but also how the airfield has overcome all the challenges that have been thrown at it and how it is now operating in profit and about to enter into the space age.. We look forward to walking with you and relating the history, the highs and the lows, and the unique stories that make Prestwick such a special place to visit.

The arrival of yesterday's (Saturday 23rd August) Douglas Dakota (DC3 / C47 - N8336C) brought back memories of the times that this type of aircraft was commonplace at Prestwick. The airfield has seen thousands of DC3s pass through the airport either on scheduled or charter passenger or cargo services, entry into the SAL hangars for maintenance or conversion, or whether simply transiting through en-route to a further destination. The aircraft evokes many memories for so many people and still turns heads to this day.

Glasgow Prestwick Airport's cargo continues to grow with the introduction of the Air China and China Southern services. This started in May and has now built up in June as shown by the graph below. Just now need to get that outward bound cargo with Scottish produce increased. July and August figures will give us a better indication if Scottish exporters are making use of these services.

Another milestone in the short history of Prestwick Aviation Tours - we've hit our 75th Tripadvisor Review. 74 5* reviews and one 4* - very pleased with that and even more pleased that our tourists are enjoying the tour and learning about just how much history there is behind the airport and just how much the airfield contributes to the local and Scottish economy. And with a great future ahead!

A Lion returning home? Last week a picture was posted on a page highlighting a 'find' in a garage in Glasgow and was anyone interested? The lion was quickly identified as a British Caledonian Lion Rampant which apparently had been moved from Prestwick decades ago when the BCAL presence at the Prestwick terminal had finished. I'm glad to say that after a bit of negotiation and a GE donation to charity, the Lion is now 'winging' his way to the GE Caledonian plant at Prestwick. Welcome Home! Just now need to find his crown!

Happy birthday Prestwick! 90 years ago today, the 9th August, The Scottish College of Aviation was incorporated , and the first true Prestwick Aerodrome was set up by Douglas Douglas-Hamilton, & David McIntyre with support from the De Havilland Aircraft Co. There had been aviation activity close by from 1913 but this was technically the Monkton Aerodrome with the new Prestwick site being set up just to the east of the main Ayr - Glasgow road and to the south of the Monkton to Sandyford Road. The next 90 years have proven to be eventful to say the least and with a great future predicted!

Well done to all at Glasgow Prestwick Airport for their support of the recent visit of the President of the US to Scotland. A complex logistical challenge exceedingly well handled. https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1CYfckouiW/
